Getting to know Lori Jespersen

Welcome. I am Dr. Lori Jespersen, PSY28173, a licensed clinical psychologist with a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University and a Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz. I bring over 15 years of experience working extensively with individuals struggling with addiction, anxiety, and life stressors. My background spans psychiatric emergency settings, the California prison system, and private practice. I have a special focus on the LGBTQIAA+ community and have been honored to receive awards for advocacy in this area. My approach My clinical approach is rooted in Narrative Therapy, with an ear for listening to the stories of individuals and helping to decipher personal truth and experience from cultural expectations and oppressive narratives. My focus I work primarily with adults and emphasize the mental health needs of LGBTQIAA+ and marginalized populations. My communication style I tend toward honesty and frankness. My background in emergency settings has honed my respect for the severity of many presentations; so while I am kind, I am direct. My journey to mental healthcare I was always spiritual, even as a child, and once heard therapists described as the "Shamans of Secular Humanism." That stuck with me. Later, while attending law school, I engaged in my own family?s therapy and saw something profound in the work of the clinician. I changed the trajectory of my life?s work to focus on therapy as a path of the sacred. My goals for you I approach goal setting collaboratively. I genuinely view each individual as the expert in their own experience; I do not take an authoritarian approach, nor do I believe in telling you what to do. I am not someone who gives advice?I am someone who shines a flashlight while you explore, develop, and change. My first session with you First sessions are typically devoted to understanding the problem you are encountering, its origins, and your goals?therapy develops from this focus.
