You may be feeling anxious, depressed, fearful, angry, uncomfortable in social situations, or experiencing other emotional difficulties. Perhaps someone you care about is having problems. Although psychological issues can cause upsetting thoughts and feelings, physiological factors (the body and brain) may also play a role. An evaluation with a holistic-focused psychiatrist can help you make sense of things and find treatments that work. As a Board-certified psychiatrist with 25+ years of experience, I have specialized training and expertise in recognizing and treating emotional and medically related issues. My therapeutic style is active, collaborative, and solution-focused. Effective treatment begins with a review of your physical health, your emotional state, and your social well-being. We explore what is not working in your life. We examine how your outlook, life experiences, and physical health influence your mood, energy, and concentration. My approach is holistic, focusing on body, mind, and spirit. To help you overcome problems and live a more fulfilling life, I use a range of treatments, including EMDR, psychotherapy, hypnosis, and medication monitoring.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Kopolow treats you as a whole person, not as a symptom or illness. Any problem impacts your mind, body, activities, and spirit. To help you be the person you want to be, changes may be necessary in all these areas. To help his patients, Dr. Kopolow has been trained in medicine, psychopharmacology, Hypnosis, EMDR, psychotherapy, and Imago Therapy. He is the only psychiatrist in Washington trained in Self-Actualization by Abraham Maslow, PhD Dr. Kopolow's primary focus is on helping people resolve their psychiatric problems so they can focus their efforts on what matters most to them. His goal is to help you not only feel better but be well. Treatment can only be effective if we have a collaborative working relationship. Therapy, like every other relationship, is shaped by past experiences. It's difficult to expect something different from what you have experienced in the past, but being open to new possibilities is often the essential step for progress. I respect and honor the courage it takes to enter treatment.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Successful treatment requires partnership. Partnership requires trust, and trust requires some risk-taking. Our first session focuses on getting to know each other; our second session involves setting goals and a treatment timeline; and by our third session, we focus on the best type of treatment, whether you feel comfortable working with me, and establishing a review date to assess progress. Treatment is hard work for both of us. I may offer suggestions, but only you can decide if or when to implement them. If we have established a trusting relationship, you will be able to tell me what works and what doesn't. Then, together we decide how to proceed. By paying for treatment, you, not the managed care company, determine what is important. Optimal treatment involves lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, and medication if needed. If you're ready to make healthy changes, I look forward to partnering with you to achieve your goals.
