Dr. Marylou Erbland, PhD

Psychologist
TX
As a Licensed Psychologist, I am passionate about helping individuals who are navigating grief, loss, trauma, and difficult life transitions. My goal is to provide a space where you feel heard, supported, and comfortable being honest about what you are experiencing. I believe therapy should feel collaborative and personal, with room for you to move at a pace that feels right for you. My own experiences with grief and loss have shaped the compassion I bring to this work. I understand that grief does not follow a predictable path and that there is no single way to move through loss. Whether you are grieving the death of someone you love, working through a traumatic experience, adjusting to a major life change, or simply trying to understand why things feel so difficult, you do not have to navigate it alone. My education, professional experience, and extensive clinical training guide the care I provide. I use evidence-based approaches, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), while tailoring treatment to the needs of each individual. DBT can help with managing intense emotions, tolerating distress, strengthening relationships, and developing healthier ways of responding to difficult situations. EMDR can help individuals process painful or traumatic experiences that may continue to affect their emotions, relationships, and daily lives. I have experience working with adolescents, adults, and families facing grief, trauma, emotional distress, and significant life changes. I do not view grief or trauma as something that needs to be “fixed” or simply gotten over. Instead, I work with clients to better understand what they are carrying, reconnect with their strengths, and develop ways of coping that feel meaningful and sustainable. I believe one of the most important parts of therapy is the relationship between the psychologist and the person seeking support. I work to create a trusting & nonjudgmental space.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe therapy should be a collaborative experience built on trust, compassion, and understanding. Starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially when you're navigating grief, trauma, or a difficult life transition. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where you feel comfortable showing up as you are and exploring what you're experiencing without pressure or expectations. As a Licensed Psychologist, I work with adolescents, adults, and families experiencing grief and loss, trauma, emotional distress, and significant life changes. My own experiences with grief and loss have shaped the compassion and understanding I bring to my work. I recognize that grief doesn't follow a predictable path and that everyone processes difficult experiences differently. My therapeutic approach is individualized and informed by evidence-based practices, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Depending on your needs, our work may focus on managing intense emotions, developing healthier coping strategies, strengthening relationships, or processing painful experiences that continue to affect your daily life. I don't believe grief or trauma needs to be fixed or simply gotten over. Instead, I want to help you better understand what you're carrying, reconnect with your strengths, and develop tools that support meaningful and sustainable healing. Most importantly, you don't have to have everything figured out before coming to therapy. We will work together at a pace that feels right for you. My hope is that through our work, you develop greater self-understanding, compassion for yourself, and the confidence to move forward knowing that your experiences are part of your story, but they don't have to determine what comes next.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, and learning more about your experiences, concerns, and goals. During our initial sessions, I want to create an environment where you feel comfortable sharing at your own pace. There is no expectation that you have to discuss everything right away or know exactly where to begin. Once I have a better understanding of your needs, we will work together to identify areas you would like to focus on and develop a treatment approach that feels appropriate for you. I believe therapy should be collaborative, so your goals, preferences, and feedback are an important part of the process. Depending on what you're experiencing, our work may involve processing grief or traumatic experiences, understanding emotional patterns, developing healthier coping strategies, or strengthening your ability to manage difficult situations. I incorporate evidence-based approaches such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) when appropriate. DBT can help with emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal relationships, while EMDR may help process painful or traumatic experiences that continue to affect your daily life. Throughout treatment, we will regularly evaluate your progress, discuss any challenges, and adjust our approach as needed. Some sessions may focus on exploring difficult emotions and experiences, while others may involve learning practical skills and strategies to help you navigate everyday life. I recognize that healing is not a linear process, and everyone's needs are different. My goal is to provide a trusting, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you feel heard and empowered. Ultimately, I want our work together to help you reconnect with your strengths, develop greater self-understanding, and move forward with more confidence, compassion, and emotional well-being.
