Who is a surgeon?

A surgeon is a trained physician who can perform surgeries. This profession demands exceptional manual proficiency and fine motor skills to carry out complex procedures needed to investigate diseases, remove or repair damaged tissues, and improve the function or appearance of an organ or body part.

What kind of education and training do surgeons receive?

Aspiring surgeons first complete their graduation with pre-medical or other science-oriented subjects. After graduation, students enroll in a medical college where they study and train for four years. They study theory for the first two years and receive practical training for the following two years. Additionally, students learn to diagnose and treat various illnesses under the guidance of experts in medical settings such as clinics and hospitals.

On clearing medical school, students earn a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) or a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. Doctors then complete a residency in surgery, which can take a minimum of five years, depending on the specialty chosen. After completing the residency, they must intern in a hospital's surgery department for a few years. The duration of the internship, too, can vary depending on the specialty. Surgeons must clear a stringent state-level licensing process before they can begin practice.

Surgeons can also get board-certified by clearing examinations conducted by their respective boards and fulfilling any other requirements. For example, the American Board of Surgery (ABS) offers vascular, general, pediatric, and critical surgical care certifications.

What are different surgical specialties?

There are different surgeons for each part of your body, and they utilize various techniques. Below are some typical surgical specialties with their scope of work:

  • General surgery: A general surgeon operates on different conditions affecting multiple body areas.
  • Neurosurgery: The surgeons specializing in this field are called neurosurgeons. It includes all aspects of brain surgery, from pre-operative imaging to the removal of tumors.
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery: Surgeons specializing in this field work on the face, facial bones, and neck. The procedures can range from minor surgeries to complex and major surgeries such as head and neck surgery.
  • Plastic surgery: Plastic surgeons work on cosmetic surgeries and handle the replacement, repair, and reconstruction of the body.
  • Trauma and orthopedic surgery: These surgeons address musculoskeletal system problems, encompassing bones, joints, and related tissues, including ligaments, muscles, and nerves.
  • Cardiothoracic surgery: A cardiothoracic surgeon works on illnesses of the lungs, heart, esophagus, and chest. The procedures performed by these surgeons tend to be significant and often complex.
  • Otolaryngology (ENT): These surgeons specialize in all aspects of the skull base, head and neck region, and facial plastic surgery.
  • Vascular surgery: Vascular surgeons work on arteries and veins. They diagnose and treat vascular system conditions.
  • Academic surgery: Academic surgeons are involved in clinical work and some research or teaching in higher education settings. They are committed to both the clinical aspects of the research and the job.
  • Pediatric surgery: Pediatric surgeons work on treating trauma, disease, and malformations in the childhood years, ranging from the fetal period to the teenage years.
  • Urology: A urology surgeon deals with the urological system, which includes the bladder, kidney, and urinary problems and male sexual and reproductive health.

When and why should one visit a surgeon near you?

Surgeries can be for various reasons. For example, a specialist may refer you to a surgeon if they think you can benefit from surgery or treatment from a surgeon. Surgeries can be emergent or elective. Life-threatening situations such as serious injuries or illnesses require emergent surgery. On the other hand, elective surgeries happen gradually, and the patient has the time to decide when to opt for the same. However, some elective surgeries may not be optional.

You can also visit a surgeon if you need an accurate diagnosis of your condition. Surgeons can perform cosmetic surgery if you want to change your appearance or repair and remove diseased organs or tissue. They can perform biopsies by getting specific tissue from a suspected malignant area or removing an obstruction.

Surgeons can move body parts back into their correct position, transplant organs, put mechanical or electronic devices in the body when required, or redirect blood vessels.

What is the difference between a physician and a surgeon?

Although all surgeons are physicians, not every physician is qualified to perform surgery. Surgeons are doctors who receive specialized training and certification to conduct surgical procedures, which involve operating on internal structures like organs, tissues, and bones to address injuries or medical conditions.

A primary care physician (PCP) or general practitioner focuses on general medicine rather than specializing in one specific area and typically does not perform surgery. In contrast, a general surgeon is a doctor who has chosen to specialize in surgery, focusing on general surgical procedures rather than a specific surgical field.

Tips to select a reliable surgeon near you

Here are some things to consider when finding the right surgeon who meets your needs to ensure a safe and positive treatment journey:

  • Review qualifications

Qualifications are essential when searching for a surgeon. Verify that they have the proper education, training, and certification for the surgery you need. Seek a board-certified surgeon who has completed an accredited residency program and fellowship training and holds additional certifications.

  • Research their experience

Experience is another vital factor in choosing a surgeon. Aim for one with a solid record of the specific procedure you need, including success rates, complications, and patient satisfaction. Consider their experience level, including how long they've been practicing and the annual volume of surgeries they perform.

  • Gather referrals

Referrals from your general practitioner or primary care physician can help you find reputable surgeons. Friends or family members who have undergone similar procedures may also offer valuable insights when choosing a surgeon near you.

  • Check online reviews

In today's digital world, finding information about surgeons is easy. Read online reviews, ratings, and patient testimonials to understand others' experiences and satisfaction levels.

  • Confirm insurance coverage

If you have insurance through a private plan or employer, check with your provider to confirm coverage availability for the surgeon and the facility. Your insurance company can outline out-of-pocket expenses and authorize treatment in advance, ensuring a smoother experience.
