Dr. James Powell hales from West Valley City, UT. He graduated from Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho), and from Utah State University. From there he attended the University of Michigan where he received a doctorate degree in dentistry in 2007. In between living in these frigid environments of Idaho, Northern Utah, and Michigan he served an LDS mission in the tropical islands of the Philippines, where he came to the realization that a long cold winter is not necessary for enjoyment of life. His first year out of dental school was spent in a residency program for Advanced Education in General Dentistry studying and practicing all aspects of family dentistry with rotations through orthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthodontics, and pediatric dentistry. He then spent an additional three years practicing dentistry in the US Army in Georgia, during which time he deployed to Iraq and served for a year as the brigade dentist of the 1st HBCT, 3ID. Now he is happy to be in the United States with his wife and four young kids. He loves beautiful Southern Utah where he can be both close to extended family and far from snow. Service is a big part of Dr. Powell’s philosophy of general dentistry. He has volunteered extensively with Operation Smile since becoming aware of the organization while in the Philippines and plans to continue to work with them. He has also volunteered locally through the “Dentistry with a Heart” program and the “Give Kids a Smile” program. Outside of dentistry he also enjoys working in local youth soccer and scout programs. He loves to read, especially classic novels. Most of all he enjoys spending time with his wife and kids camping, hiking, canoeing, backpacking, and going to the beach. Dr. Powell prides himself on an honest and gentle approach to dentistry.
