About Dr. Maria Barnes

In 1976, after obtaining her Doctor of Optometry degree from Universidad de La Salle and becoming an Optometrist in Bogotá, Colombia, Dr. Barnes spent five years in Switzerland and obtained a certification in Orthoptics from the School of Medicine Ophthalmology Faculty in Geneva, Switzerland. As an orthoptist, Dr. Barnes is skilled in performing and interpreting a variety of diagnostic procedures where underlying ophthalmological conditions exist. She uses her extensive experience in administering eye examinations, strabismus, amblyopia, and other treatments related to binocular vision problems. She has diagnosed and successfully treated hundreds of patients in optometric practices, including university and hospital settings in Bogotá, Colombia. After teaching orthoptics for several years at La Salle University School of Optometry in Bogotá, Colombia, Dr. Barnes returned to Europe to take part in research relating to prism therapy at La Riboisière Hospital in Paris, France. When she completed her research, she brought that training home with her to begin training optometric students (through internship) in treatment procedures in her own office in Bogotá, Colombia. Continuing her optometric education and career, Dr. Barnes received certification as an Optometric Physician in the United States. She gained the admiration and respect of fellow colleagues and worked in two different U.S. optometric practices before establishing her own successful practice, which has been in business now for four years. Dr. Barnes is also fluent in three languages: Spanish, English, and French.
