Getting to know Dr. Alan Jaffe
A good fit between therapist and patient is an essential ingredient in forming an effective working alliance, assuming the therapist has strong academic credentials. That is why I encourage patients to do their research. The best way to determine whether people can work well together is to talk. There should be no charge for an initial phone consultation to evaluate this. If after a phone visit it doesn't feel like a good fit, I will help you find someone who is.
My training provides me with a strong foundation in psychological testing and treatment, incorporating behavioral and psychodynamic theory and practice. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, completed a residency in Clinical Psychology at Northwestern University, and hold a master’s degree from Antioch University as well as a bachelor’s degree from American University. This background allows me to make an accurate assessment and treatment plan that best suits an individual or couple. I have published articles internationally, contributed chapters to textbooks, and edited a Women’s Health Encyclopedia.
Additionally, I have served 36 years on the faculty of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. I work as a forensic expert and therapist in custody issues, addictions, personality disorders, post-traumatic stress, and many litigation-related matters, serving as an expert witness.

Dr. Jaffe is wonderful. He is very easy to talk with, and I get the sense that he deeply understands the points I was trying to covey to him. Although this was my first appointment with him, he made me feel very comfortable talking. He is very human and a good listener. I look forward to further sessions with Dr. Jaffe and feel as though he will be able to help me.
