About Dr. Amr Dessouki

Dr. Amr Dessouki is a Board Certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of the retina, macula and vitreous. Dr. Dessouki was born in Cairo, Egypt, and received his medical education at Cairo University, one of the oldest and largest universities in the world. Dr. Dessouki did an internal medicine residency at Brown University in Rhode Island from 1992 to 1995. Driven by his passion for ophthalmology, he then did a research fellowship at the retina division of the Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA Schoolof Medicine in 1995-1996. Dr. Dessouki then moved to the Bay Area to do his residency in Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine from 1996 through 1999, where he also served as Chief Resident. He went on to do a Vitreo-Retinal surgery fellowship at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine, Florida. Dr. Dessouki is the Director of Research at the Retinal Diagnostic Center. He is the principal investigator for several multicenter clinical trials on macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, as well as other retinal conditions. His groundbreaking research was featured on ABC News in 2008. He published many papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals, and he lectures periodically locally and overseas. Dr. Dessouki is an Assistant Clinical Professor (aff.) at Stanford University where he teaches the residents and medical students. He is the former president of the Peninsula Eye Society, the former Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the El Camino Hospital of Los Gatos, and he founded the Bay Area Retina Society.
