About Dr. Amy Nau

Amy Nau graduated from The New England College of Optometry and completed a residency in ocular disease with the Boston VA Health Service. From 2000 - 2003, she was on the staff of the Department of Ophthalmology at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. During that time she also served as a sub-investigator for clinical trials in the area of dry eye and allergy. From 2003 to 2014, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh with a secondary appointment at the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. She served as the Director of Optometric Services at the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Ophthalmology. While there, she ran the tertiary care center medical and scleral contact lens clinic and was responsible for teaching optics, refraction and contact lens courses to the medical students and ophthalmology residents. In 2005, Dr. Nau founded the Sensory Substitution Laboratory, which is affiliated with the Fox Center for Vision Restoration. Her primary goals were to explore restoring sight to the blind through artificial vision technologies, which exploit intact senses as a surrogate for vision. She has lectured and published extensively, and was the recipient of the Western Pennsylvania Optometric Association’s Young Optometrist of the Year Award in 2008. In addition to working on several ongoing research projects, she is serving on the Steering Committee for the Scleral Lens Research Group of the American Academy of Optometry.
