Getting to know Dr. Andrew Murphy

I’m a Columbia-trained psychiatrist providing thoughtful, personalized care for adults experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, and life transitions. I offer both psychotherapy and medication management, guided by each person’s goals and strengths. I completed my MD and PhD at UPenn and psychiatry residency at Columbia, where I research new treatments for depression. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and informed by the latest science—helping patients feel understood, supported, and empowered in their care. I currently have immediate appointment availability.

What should a new client know about working with you?

New clients can expect a collaborative, respectful, and curious approach. I take time to understand not only your symptoms but also your strengths, values, and the context of your life. In our work together, I move at a pace that feels right for you, offering clear guidance when helpful and space for exploration when needed. I’m transparent about treatment options—whether therapy, medication, or both—and we make decisions together based on what aligns with your goals. My style is grounded, compassionate, and informed by the latest research, and my priority is that you feel heard, safe, and supported as we work toward meaningful and sustainable change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My work typically begins with a comprehensive initial session where I learn about your history, current challenges, and what you hope to gain from treatment. From there, we collaboratively develop a plan tailored to your needs—whether that involves psychotherapy, medication management, or a combination of both. In ongoing sessions, I check in regularly about what’s working, what isn’t, and how your goals may be evolving. I integrate evidence-based approaches while staying attentive to the nuances of your lived experience, adjusting our plan as needed. Throughout the process, I aim to create a steady, supportive environment where growth feels both achievable and well-guided.
