Dr. Weckesser spent 18 years in the private practice of cardiology in Baltimore, where he served as the director of the Coronary Care Unit at Mercy Hospital. He also spent two years in the Armed Forces as a United States Army Major, including one year in Vietnam. He holds several affiliations, including with the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography, the Florida Medical Association, and the Sarasota County Medical Society.
