Dr. Brian Grant, PhD

Psychologist
921 E 86th St, Suite 210 B, Indianapolis, IN
I want to work with you if you're facing long-standing personality issues or relationship struggles stemming from them. Though not a psychoanalyst, I am strongly informed by psychoanalytic theory, particularly object relations and intersubjectivity. I like to work with individuals once or twice a week over periods of at least a year or two, and weekly with couples, focusing on the overlap between emotional issues that arise in the therapy room, in your life outside of therapy, and in your family of origin. I am also interested in concerns related to cultural difference, religious commitment, and immigration. I have taught and researched issues of personality disorders and couple relationships, especially as these are shaped by the transmission of cultural trends across generations. I seem to have an unusual ability to be present to pain without retreating and to work with people who value words very highly. I hold a PhD in Religion and Personality from the University of Chicago. I am a retired professor from a theological seminary and have for many years run training programs in pastoral counseling and marriage and family therapy. I also supervise a significant number of experienced psychotherapists for their and my ongoing learning.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I see my job as being to help you listen to yourself more clearly, and to learn what has been blocking that process to this point. I listen a lot, and can go a long time without talking. You should also know I was born in 1939, I still do this work because I love it. You should also know that I travel a good deal, but you would always have at least weeks of notice about when I'll be away.
