Getting to know Dr. Brian Lopez

I am a second-generation Guatemalan-American. My journey to become a psychologist started when I was a teenager living in South Central Los Angeles by reading “The Fifty-Minute Hour” by Robert M. Lindner. I moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Swarthmore College, including a brief study abroad stint in France. I kept moving around for nine years to explore myself and the world, working in India, Guatemala, China, and Vietnam before returning to graduate school for my doctorate. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Stanford University. These experiences have shaped my identity and how I see people, culture, and transformation. I work best with moderate- to high-functioning individuals needing support with the following concerns: anxiety trauma depression identity exploration relationship concerns academic/work/life stress

What should a new client know about working with you?

First and foremost, I am warm and friendly--not just as a psychologist but outside of work as well. I believe my authentic self helps create a safe and brave space for good therapy to happen. Afterwards, I will use my evidence-based training to help you better understand yourself and how to become the person you would like to be in the very near future.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Imagine logging into our secure video appointment in the comfort of your own home. We collaborate on what you hope to get out of therapy. You open up about what has made that difficult to achieve on your own. I listen and validate your struggles. We collaborate on small goals to get you closer each week. You start to feel better. When your goals are achieved, you graduate from therapy.

Brian Lopez is a fantastic therapist. I have seen him weekly for over a year. I have made tremendous progress. He is very down to earth and non-judgmental. I highly recommend him. I look forward to each of our sessions.
It was my first time trying therapy and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Dr. Lopez always made me feel comfortable and understood. I could be vulnerable and know that I would be heard and given genuine advice and frameworks to think about for the future. I started therapy for a recent life event that happened but ended up digging deeper into emotions and feelings that I've been holding onto for so long. I'm very thankful to have had Dr. Lopez as my therapist and highly recommend him.
