Psychologist
NY
I am a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in working with people coping with trauma, grief, and the impact of these experiences on relationships. I believe therapy has the potential to unlock a person's natural tendency toward growth and resilience, so I take a strengths-based perspective in my work. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University, Brooklyn, and completed my internship in Clinical Psychology at Massachusetts General Hospital. My professional background includes training in a variety of settings such as hospitals and community health centers, where I have worked with both individuals and couples.

Getting to know Dr. Brian Van Buren

What should a new client know about working with you?

I strive to be collaborative and active, where we first get to know you as a whole person in order to make the best decisions about what directions to take in therapy. I generally rely on a combination of insight and skills-based approaches, and think it's important to regularly check in about whether therapy is meeting your goals. I have sought specialized training in the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well as complicated grief.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I believe in the benefits of a supportive and authentic therapeutic relationship to promote healing and growth, so I am committed to helping people who work with me feel heard and understood in each session. Through this, I hope that sessions will allow for the type of self-reflection and curiosity that creates sustained and meaningful change.
