Hi, I'm Dr. Clay Hurley, a clinical neuropsychologist with a PsyD and a Master's in Psychology from Chatham University. I love helping people understand their brain's aging processes. It can be difficult to know when memory loss or word-finding problems are part of normal aging or signs of more significant decline, such as Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia. Fortunately, neuropsychological assessment allows us to detect and characterize cognitive changes throughout the lifespan. If you're looking for answers about cognitive changes, you've come to the right place.

Getting to know Dr. Clay Hurley

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that questions about cognitive aging, memory loss, and dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's disease) deserve the utmost attention, respect, and detailed analysis. Most people have concerns about their brain's aging processes, but don't know where to turn for answers or help. With extensive training and experience in hospitals, memory centers, rehabilitation centers, and private practices across three states, I have the training, experience, and tools necessary to get you the answers you're looking for. I grew frustrated with clinics and corporations that placed the bottom line ahead of patient experience; thus, the idea of Carolina Cognition Center was born. At CCC, you'll receive one-on-one attention from me throughout the entirety of your evaluation. You'll be met with a smile and be treated like family. Most importantly, you'll be given the time and attention you deserve.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A neuropsychological evaluation is different than your typical doctor's appointment. Here's what to expect: Part 1 - Interview Your evaluation will begin with a clinical interview. Dr. Hurley will ask you questions about your symptoms and concerns, personal background, and medical history. You are welcome to bring a spouse, family member, or trusted individual with you to the interview, as they can provide valuable perspective regarding your case. If you have any of your medical records, you are encouraged to bring them. A typical interview takes 35-45 minutes to complete. Part 2 – Testing Once the interview is completed, you’ll work with Dr. Hurley one-on-one to complete a series of cognitive tests. Cognitive testing allows Dr. Hurley to measure your brain's functions (e.g., attention, memory, language, problem solving, etc.). Your testing battery is customized to assess your unique symptoms and concerns. While a typical testing battery takes two hours to complete, your evaluation could take more or less time. If a loved one has accompanied you to the evaluation, they are welcome to wait for you in our comfortable lounge area. Part 3 – Data Analysis Congratulations, you’re done for the day (but Dr. Hurley's work is just beginning)! After the interview and testing are complete, go home and enjoy your day. Dr. Hurley will spend the rest of his day analyzing and interpreting your data. He will put all of your results, including diagnoses and treatment recommendations, into a written report. Part 4 – Feedback You'll have a feedback session with Dr. Hurley a few days later (these typically occur on Thursdays). During feedback, Dr. Hurley will explain your results in an easy-to-understand manner. Feedback sessions can be completed in-person or via telephone – your choice! Most feedback sessions last approximately 45 minutes. Dr. Hurley will provide you with a copy of your report that you are free to take to future appointments with your medical professionals.
