Getting to know Dr. Cynthia Mayer

We all live in relationship?to our families, friends, work, and communities, to our histories and our future selves. Each phase of life presents different challenges to these relationships. Some transitions go smoothly; in others, we face obstacles from our environment and from within. All have the potential to lead us to discover new aspects of ourselves. The COVID quarantine and its aftermath have presented unprecedented challenges to our home and work lives. I am available to help individuals and couples explore their place in this new world. I hold a PhD in Developmental Psychology from Yeshiva University and a Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the Fifth Avenue Counseling Center. Additionally, I completed an externship at the Ackerman Institute for the Family, which has enriched my understanding of family dynamics and therapeutic approaches.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Some clients come to my office with a specific problem to be solved, some with a general feeling of unease or dissatisfaction. I listen carefully to their goals and expectations. I ask a lot of questions in my initial interviews to locate a client in his/her interpersonal environment. At the end of the first few sessions we set goals for treatment and an approximate date to evaluate our work together. I see couples together and usually suggest individual sessions in addition to our joint sessions. I often give "homework" assignments to be completed between sessions. I am a good listener and do not hesistate to give feedback or advice when useful.
