Dr. Damon Murphy, PsyD

Psychologist
VA
My name is Dr. Murphy, an African American licensed clinical psychologist in Virginia and Washington, DC. I graduated with my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University/DC in August 2011 and completed my internship at Howard University. I also hold a Master's in Professional Counseling from Argosy University and a Bachelor's degree from Florida International University. I treat mood disorders, anxiety, men's issues, and general life challenges such as relationship concerns. I also work with sexual and racial minorities. My journey in this field began early in life as a youth growing up in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, New York. Experiencing the challenges of my various communities sparked my interest in understanding how social forces shape human beings across race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, and disability. Since then, I have applied my professional development in multiple military environments, including Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Robins Air Force Base, and the Naval Branch Clinic at Indian Head. Other experience includes Psychogeriatric Services, the Psychiatric Institute of Washington, and Howard University's Counseling Service. Additional settings where I have worked include the District of Columbia Superior Court's Child Guidance Clinic, the Northern Virginia Training Center, Fairfax County Woodburn Place/Crisis Care Program, and the Art Institute of Washington.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I practice individual and group therapy from both insight-oriented psychodynamic work and action-oriented Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques. What this means is that in the beginning of treatment I work to increase your insight then take that and use it toward meaningful change. In addition, I may employ experiential exercises that help the client become actively engaged in their healing in a “here-and-now” way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Dr. Murphy does offer a 20-minute free consultation session to discuss the possibility of your treatment. Once it is determined that the connection is a good fit, therapy can begin. Therapy begins with a 90-minute in-depth intake assessment of the issues and with you a treatment plan is created to guide the way forward. The goals are typically to reduce or cease problematic thinking, feelings, and behaviors that have been present for a short-time or all your life. The length of treatment depends on the issues and complexity. We can discuss the details particular to you at your intake/consultation session.
