The most important thing to me is the relationship between patient and doctor. You need to be able to connect and trust each other when making potentially life-altering decisions together. I can have all my tests and care plans ready, but if patients don’t have a relationship with me and aren’t comfortable with what I’m trying to do, they’re not going to follow through. That’s why I believe in shared decision making—talking with patients about, for example, undergoing tests, whether they’ll be comfortable with the test, its possible results, and what we may want to do in light of those results. It’s also important that we have a team-based practice with input from a variety of providers such as dietitians, nutritionists, nurses, and physician assistants, who together help provide comprehensive care. I initially went into the music field and worked in recording engineering before entering medicine around age 23 or 24. I have family in medicine—my mother was a nurse, my father is a physician, and my brother is a physician assistant—and I enjoy helping people, whether in times of need, sadness, or happiness. It’s rewarding to have people rely on you, especially as the medical field becomes more complex and fragmented. I try to let patients know they have a cheerleader and coach on their side. I grew up in Drums, Pa., and recently moved back to the area after completing my residency in Internal Medicine at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, so I have roots in the community. I earned my Doctor of Medicine from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and my bachelor’s degree from King’s College. I’m involved with my children’s sports activities, and we attend church regularly. I’m also part of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and keep in touch with my medical school. The biggest thing for me is spending time with my family, but I still enjoy playing guitar. I used to be in a band but now just play for myself.
