Getting to know Dr. David Purselle
Dr. David Purselle is a board-certified psychiatrist and clinical researcher dedicated to advancing mental health care through innovative treatments and evidence-based science. He serves as Medical Director of Advanced Discovery Research and Georgia Psychiatric Consultants, as well as Chief Medical Officer of MrsMD, where he leads initiatives at the intersection of psychiatry, obesity medicine, and women’s health.
After earning his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Purselle completed his psychiatry residency at Emory University School of Medicine, where he later served as an Assistant Professor. He also holds a Master of Science in Clinical Research from Emory University and a Bachelor of Engineering from Vanderbilt University.
With over two decades of experience in clinical psychiatry and psychopharmacology, Dr. Purselle has served as principal or sub-investigator on more than 80 clinical trials across phases II–IV. His research portfolio spans major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, Alzheimer’s disease, and ADHD, contributing to the development of novel therapeutics in mood and cognitive disorders.
Board-certified by both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Obesity Medicine, Dr. Purselle integrates biological, behavioral, and lifestyle approaches to optimize patient outcomes. His clinical focus includes treatment-resistant depression, innovative therapies such as Spravato® and TMS, and metabolic health in psychiatric populations.
Known for his compassionate and evidence-driven approach, Dr. Purselle continues to bridge clinical care and research to expand access to effective mental health treatments for patients and families in Atlanta and beyond.
What should a new client know about working with you?
My approach to psychiatry is centered on the biopsychosocial model, which means I look at how biological, psychological, and social factors all contribute to mental health. I don’t provide formal psychotherapy, but I focus on thorough diagnostic evaluations and individualized medication management to help patients feel and function better.
In our first visit, I take time to understand your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, and life circumstances. This helps me develop a clear and practical treatment plan tailored to your needs. I believe in collaboration and transparency, so we’ll discuss the reasoning behind each recommendation and decide together on the best course of action.
I treat a range of conditions including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and treatment-resistant conditions. My goal is to help you achieve long-term stability and improvement in mood, energy, and daily functioning—not just quick symptom relief.

What is your typical process for working with clients?
Our work together begins with a comprehensive initial evaluation. During this first visit, we’ll review your history in depth so I can make an accurate diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan. This may include medication, lab testing, or coordination with your therapist or primary care provider.
Follow-up appointments are usually shorter and focus on monitoring your progress, adjusting medications if needed, and addressing new challenges as they arise. While I don’t offer talk therapy, I encourage an open and collaborative process and often work alongside therapists to ensure well-rounded, effective care.
My goal is to provide evidence-based, compassionate treatment that helps you move toward lasting improvement and a better quality of life.

All visits are self-pay, and I strive to make the payment process straightforward and transparent. Payment is required at the time of service—either online for telehealth appointments or upon arrival for in-person visits.
For telehealth appointments, you’ll receive a secure online payment link through our scheduling or telehealth platform before your session begins. This allows for easy, contactless payment using a credit card, debit card, or HSA/FSA card.
For in-person visits, payments can be made at check-in using the same accepted methods. We do not bill or process insurance claims, but if you would like to submit documentation for potential out-of-network reimbursement, we can provide a detailed receipt (superbill) upon request.
This self-pay model allows for greater privacy, flexibility, and individualized care, without the limitations imposed by insurance requirements. It also ensures that your treatment plan is based solely on clinical needs and your personal goals—not on external coverage rules.
