“Ok, so I will admit, I've seen other providers on ZocDoc and I have yet to meet someone who was this fast to respond and get me in. I had been seeing Dr. Ream's profile for a week now and he didn't have any openings. He a had a few open this week and I was able to get in to see him next day. Another big selling factor was he didn't try to push any type of political or religious ideology. I've met with some other therapists out there who are ultra liberal, and Dr. Ream is not that way. What a relief. I actually vibe with this guy and feel like I am not being treated like just another number.”

“I was trying to find a psychologist who didn't have a month or longer wait time, and I found Dr. Ream. I scheduled an appointment, his staff were really quick to contact me, verified my insurance and sent paperwork really quickly. I really enjoyed my first session with Dr. Ream - he really made it clear what to expect, and I liked the fact he takes his time to get to know you and doesn't jump to conclusions. I'm excited to work with him ongoing. ”

Getting to know Dr. Derek Ream

Hi there! I’m Dr. Derek Ream, a Psychologist and the Owner and CEO of Sugar Land Psychological Associates. My professional work includes individual and group psychotherapy, enhanced by my specialization in psychological and forensic psychological assessments. My areas of practice include treating insomnia, depression, anxiety, OCD, and ADHD. Additionally, I have a significant interest in working with members of the LGBTQ+ community as a fellow gay man myself. My professional background includes previous roles as an Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, a Psychologist in the Substance Disorders Treatment Program at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, an Adjunct Professor at Clark State College, and a Forensic Psychologist with Forum Ohio, LLC. In academia, I’ve published peer-reviewed book chapters and journal abstracts, and presented extensively in the areas of neuropsychology, rehabilitation psychology, and cognitive neuroscience at various national and international conferences. When I’m not seeing patients or managing my group practice, I enjoy attending concerts, playing video games, visiting the shooting range, and exploring global cuisines through cooking. On a personal note, I’m married to Dr. Andre Fernandes, and we share our home with our two dogs, Giovani and Annie. Before I became a psychologist, I was a professional orchestral bass trombonist, having performed with a variety of orchestras across the U.S., and trained at the New England Conservatory of Music, which gives me a unique perspective in my current work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a psychologist, I provide therapy and assessments. Please note, I DO NOT prescribe medication. I also DO NOT provide psychological assessments for court, disability, or legal purposes. My patients have described me as being warm, silly, authentic, yet straight forward. I am known to "stir the pot" when necessary, but also be that person to support you when needed.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We've made it super easy to get started with us. Submit your appointment request with me. My front office staff will call you ASAP to go over the paperwork process, get some information about your insurance so we can verify it, and then they will get you scheduled for your first appointment with me. Typically, the first 1-2 sessions are geared towards doing an initial evaluation where I will go over any relevant symptoms and history that could be helpful for us to plan treatment. All paperwork is done via online in our HIPAA-compliant secure patient portal!

Totally worth to see this guy. He isn't like other therapists out there, he will actually try to know you, understand you, and if need-be, challenge you on things. Totally my style.
Dr. Ream is quick to respond, is personable, funny, and holds you accountable. I've been with other therapists who just like to spend the whole hour validating you, but Dr. Ream actually provides therapy. I've been with him for a few months now and I am already doing things I haven't done in years. I am no longer so depressed that I can't function - I got a new job, I actually started taking some courses again and I have reclaimed my life. Thank you Dr. Ream, you are truly an amazing human.
Very informative and helpful information given. Always listening to what the patient says and provides feedback that is helpful.
