Getting to know Dr. Di Liu

Hello! I’m Dr. Di Liu, a licensed Clinical Psychologist, Assistant Professor, and Clinical Supervisor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. I specialize in helping individuals and couples move beyond 'survival mode' toward a life of curiosity, healing, and hope. My approach is deeply relational and person-centered. I integrate Internal Family Systems (IFS) and psychodynamic depth with practical DBT skills to help you navigate complex trauma, life transitions, and relationship challenges. Rather than just managing symptoms, we will work together to uncover the underlying patterns that leave you feeling stuck, helping you reconnect with your most authentic, real self. I focus on high-quality, personalized sessions, ensuring each client receives the depth of attention and clinical expertise they deserve. I am committed to providing a safe, non-judgmental space where you can feel truly seen and understood. I provide psychotherapy in both English and Mandarin Chinese (including Shanghainese), offering culturally sensitive care that honors your unique background and story. I look forward to supporting you on your journey toward lasting growth and inner freedom.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Choosing a therapist is a significant investment in yourself. My practice is designed for those seeking a high-touch, personalized care experience that goes beyond traditional talk therapy. Our collaboration is a deep dive into the patterns that leave you feeling stuck, using an approach that is both intellectually grounded and emotionally attuned. To ensure you receive the quality of care you deserve, I maintain a small, dedicated caseload, allowing me to be fully present and responsive to your unique journey. We can work together in English, Mandarin, or Shanghainese. I bring a deep appreciation for the complexities of cultural identity, life transitions, and the nuances of the immigrant experience, ensuring you feel seen in your full context.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My therapeutic process is a collaborative journey that moves from establishing safety to deep, transformative healing. 1. Creating a Secure Foundation In our initial sessions, my priority is to build a safe, non-judgmental space where you feel truly heard. We will explore your immediate concerns and the goals you have for therapy. This phase is about 'landing'—giving you a place to catch your breath and feel supported. 2. Understanding Patterns & Navigating the Internal World Using a Relational and IFS (Internal Family Systems) lens, we will gently uncover the underlying patterns and 'parts' of yourself that may feel stuck or conflicted. We don't just look at symptoms; we look at the whole story—how your past experiences and cultural background shape your present. 3. Integration and Lasting Growth As we work through complex emotions or trauma, we integrate practical DBT skills to help you stay grounded. The goal is to move beyond mere coping into a state of 'thriving,' where you feel more connected to your authentic self and empowered to navigate life's transitions with resilience and inner freedom.

Would recommend Dr Liu to anyone, has huge break throughs with him.
I had a great experience with Di. I definitely recommend him as a therapist!
My visits and sessions with Dr. Liu have been instrumental to my personal growth and self-understanding. His approach is gentle, compassionate, caring and extremely effective.
Di has meaningfully changed the trajectory of my life in the few months that we worked together. This is the result of his unique combination of listening skills, intellect, and empathy. I never felt like he was "going through the motions." I highly recommend working with Di.
I worked with Dr Liu for a year on a specific issue, and I found our sessions to be helpful. We drilled down to the core issues over months and there was a resolution of sort. Dr Liu listens, and we were able to discuss some of the issues I faced from a removed, non-emotional perspective, in my opinion. He practices compassion, without over-indulging in only saying what he thinks his patients want to hear. I thought he struck a good balance.
Di is incredibly kind, welcoming, and perceptive as a therapist and put me at ease from our first session. He helped me navigate through life priorities and better manage work stress, leading me to uncover valuable insights about myself and find a sense of peace and emotional awareness in daily life. I left each of our sessions feeling more grounded and empowered. I cannot recommend Di more highly.
I truly enjoyed working with Dr. Liu. He has been incredibly supportive, compassionate, and insightful. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking meaningful and effective therapy.
Loved having Di as my therapist - he not only listens but provides critical thoughts and tie them back to my themes. Very flexible too - we conducted the therapy in Chinese and English.
I have worked with Dr Liu for most of the last year. His empathy and compassion and unique insights have been instrumental and I've made the more progress in therapy than ever before. Thoroughly recommended!
I saw Dr. Liu weekly for about 8 months. He was my first therapist, and I had a great experience with him. He was highly professional, understanding, and easy to talk to. I would recommend Dr. Liu to a friend.
I had great experience with Dr. Liu. I feel really supported and understood in our sessions. He created a space where I feel safe to open up.
