Getting to know Dr. Eileen Chen

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Denver, Colorado, with a PsyD and Master’s in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hartford, and a Bachelor’s degree from George Mason University. I specialize in treating substance misuse and trauma in adolescents (ages 13-17) and young adults (ages 18-35). I have extensive experience working with adolescents, young adults, and parents/caregivers of individuals navigating these challenges, providing support and guidance to promote healing within the family system. I have a specialized focus on culturally responsive care, particularly for adolescents and young adults of color, integrating evidence-based practices like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Brainspotting, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and harm reduction approaches. As a second-generation Chinese American and child of immigrants, I understand the deeply layered struggle of finding belonging and identity and the feeling of being caught between identities, expectations, and experiences. With both professional and personal insight into navigating cultural and generational differences and the stigma around substance use and mental health, my goal is to help young people of color unravel the complexities of identity, trauma, and cultural expectation to reclaim their sense of self. My goal as a therapist is to provide a supportive space where clients can confront life’s challenges, explore their values, and develop the tools needed to get unstuck from unhelpful patterns and create the life they want to live. As a person with a varied and unconventional background, I believe that all humans have the capacity to make the changes that matter to them, but it’s hard doing it alone. I’d be honored to walk with you on your healing journey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My clients describe me as authentic and easy-going. I enjoy bringing humor into therapy because not everything needs to be so serious all the time. I approach the therapeutic relationship with openness and compassion. My approach is person-centered and strengths-based at it’s core. I meet each client where they’re at and work collaboratively to determine what changes they want to make. Your goals are my goals and you are the expert of your own life. In therapy, you are the captain of the ship; I'm just helping you sail it and get where you want to go. I carefully consider each client’s unique concerns and circumstances to craft an approach that is personalized to fit their needs, goals, and life circumstances. Humans are complex and therapy is not a one-size-fits-all. I use an integrative approach (psychodynamic, ACT, EFT, and Brainspotting) and will keep your unique cultural, historical, and social contexts in mind when understanding you and what you’re going through. Together we will gain insight into the patterns keeping you stuck and learn the skills you need to take control of your life again.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the beginning of treatment, I'll spend most of our time getting to know you and your story, what you've been through and where you want to go. I want to know about your past because it influences much of how we think, feel and act in the present. We'll also clarify your values and goals in the process, figure out what's happening in your present that is getting your way or keeping you stuck, and build skills to help you cope with your inner emotions and cultivate awareness. Through this, we may uncover that there is a need process through traumas from your past that are keeping you stuck, which we will do so using evidence-based, trauma-informed techniques if you're ready. My goal as a therapist is to provide you with a relational experience that allows you to safely confront the necessary parts of yourself to help you move toward awareness and healing, clarify your values, and feel empowered with the strength and skills to take control of your life again.
