Psychologist
MA
Dr. Burdo is a highly trained, seasoned clinical psychologist offering remote individual psychotherapy to clients ages 18 and up. Over the past 25 year, she has attained expertise on topics including, but not limited to: depression, stress, anxiety, grief, various traumas, divorce, health, parenting, disordered eating, aging, retirement, and issues with relationships including domestic violence, sexuality, finances, career, and more. Dr. Burdo has spent a lot of time exploring both western and eastern approaches to reducing human suffering. For those interested in traditional psychotherapy, Dr. Burdo offers a wealth of western psychology techniques to help bring relief and provide guidance toward significant improvements in functioning. Additionally, for those interested in exploring not only the psychological and the emotional, but the spritual and how that side of the human experience can aid us in living better, Dr. Burdo relies on eastern philosophies and practices to help her clients move toward greater stability, peace, health, abundance, worthiness, and transformation. Dr. Burdo has been transparent about her own journey and her work on herself using both approaches and has used the knowledge gained from the experiences of personal transformation to benefit her clients. Dr. Burdo’s philosophy is that when choosing a psychotherapist, one should consider whether the therapist has done enough personal work to be able to lead the client to where they want to go, thus avoiding a situation in which the blind is leading the blind. Dr. Burdo’s background as a refugee and a self-made immigrant makes her value a highly practical therapeutic approach that utilizes perspective taking, compassion, humility, humor, laughter, transparency, and directness to help clients move as quickly as possibly toward relief and greater clarity, stability, agency, sence of worthiness, and overall well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I want for my clients what they want for themselves, and I work tirelessly to be on their side! Additionally, I want to help clients learn that they are the ones who know how to best get to a place of well-being and live their most inspired lives. Every person is in possession of their own guidance system, whether they know it or not. While there may well be compelling reasons to engage in long-term therapy and seek guidance through that process, it is also important to keep working toward emotional independence from all others, including any therapist. After all, our sense of self-worth comes from our ability to manage ourselves independently. That said, I am always happy to be available to see my clients throughout their life span for as long as it is desired and beneficial. In the sessions, I am direct, transparent, and down to earth. I listen carefully, provide plentiful direct feedback, and give guidance, direction, and advice when needed. I may advise that the client check out certain books, podcasts, and other resources in between sessions, should they feel so inclined. When appropriate, I like to use humor to help with perspective taking, and in general, making the sessions both enjoyable and productive is always the goal. Life is difficult enough, no need to suffer through therapy as well :)

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the first session, the goal is to evaluate the personal and professiona fit between me and the new client. It is best done by having the client choose a problem to work on during the hour and see what it is like to think together. It is my experience that when the fit is solid, the therapy is more productive, enjoyable and overall, beneficial. If the fit is not ideal, there would be a discussion at the end of the first session as to how to proceed. Assuming that the client and I go forward with the therapy, the general format is to have the client bring to me whatever is of interest for them to work on that day. Here are a few considerations to help with choosing a therapist/evaluating your current one: 1. Look for a great personality match! If you don’t enjoy your therapist as a person, it will be difficult to understand them and feel understood in return even if they give you relevant feedback. Be picky, hold out for a real match that feels like a click. 2. Your therapist should be able to offer you more than what your friends and family can give you for free. Be honest with yourself: Is every conversation eye-opening, or are you having your hand held and that’s about it? 3. Have a realistic time frame for the work you want to accomplish. If you’ve struggled with something for a very long time, it may take a while for you to feel better. At the same time, if you haven’t made enough progress, think about why that might be. 4. Have hard conversations with your therapist if you feel a lack of movement forward. Hold your therapist accountable for their part: Are they taking it too easy on you during the sessions, or do they simply not have more to offer you? Also, be ready to take in honest feedback about why they think things are slow-moving. 5. Be willing to move on and trust that something is NOT better than nothing! If you have not gotten to where you want to go, be brave and trust that you can find a good match for yourself and look for someone new.
