Getting to know Dr. Elizabeth Spitzer

I am a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in evidence-based treatment for trauma, anxiety, and managing medical diagnoses (e.g., cancer, rare disease, autoimmune disorders) in adults. I approach therapy with authenticity and compassion to help my clients create meaningful and sustainable improvements in their quality of life. I work to create a safe and non-judgmental environment for individual across all backgrounds. I offer cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). In addition, I have specialized training in trauma-focused treatments, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE). Education and Training: I received my B.A. and M.A. in psychology from Vanderbilt University and my Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Auburn University. I completed my clinical psychology internship and fellowship in the PTSD Clinic and Women’s Trauma and Recovery Clinic at the Boston VA Healthcare System, where I received extensive training in psychological assessment and the delivery of evidence-based treatments.

What should a new client know about working with you?

If you're struggling with trauma, anxiety, a new medical diagnosis, or the quiet weight of caring for someone you love, you don't have to figure it out alone. I'm a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in trauma (childhood, sexual assault, accidents, complicated birth), anxiety, and stress in adults, including the unique challenges that come with infertility, NICU experiences, and coping with cancer or medical diagnoses. Using evidence-based therapies, we'll work at your pace, building on your existing strengths while developing new tools to help you move from surviving to living a meaningful, full life with more ease. My approach to therapy is collaborative and grounded in who you are, including your history and what matters to you most. We will work together to understand your symptoms, set meaningful goals, and build skills you can use outside of sessions. My approach integrates cognitive and behavioral principles, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I also offer evidence-based trauma-focused therapies, including cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and prolonged exposure (PE). I believe that therapy is most effective when it is tailored to the individual needs, strengths, and values of each client.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Together, we will work to identify your treatment goals, further develop existing strengths, learn new skills, and pursue what is most important to you.
