Getting to know Dr. Emily Kaufman

Whether you are looking for help for yourself or your child; whether you have a clear idea of the "problem" or only a general sense of things being "not right" or "not working"; or whether you are worried that your problems are too big or too small to bring to a therapist, I understand these concerns and want to assure you that deciding to contact a therapist is an act of empowerment. Making a connection with a therapist can be a positive step toward dealing with difficult issues and getting "unstuck." I am a compassionate, active listener who will help you clarify and then work toward your goals within a supportive atmosphere. I have a varied practice that includes all ages and have helped people with a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, parenting, self-esteem, and relationships. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and hold a Master's degree in Developmental Psychology from Yale University. I have been a licensed psychologist since 2001, first in New Jersey (until 2012), then in California (2012-present), and now in Idaho as well. Since COVID, I have closed my physical office and am providing services through telehealth only.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

For adult clients, we will work together from the first session to create an atmosphere of trust and understanding, clarify your goals for therapy, and decide how to actively work toward those goals in manageable steps. For children and teens, I will meet with parents first for a full "intake" session in which I will gather information about the family, developmental history, and parents' perspective on the issues they want addressed in the therapy. For all clients, I will check in throughout our work to make sure that therapy is meeting your goals.

Emily is so caring and gives me very helpful feedback. She’s a great resource for coping skills with realistic ways to implement them.
You should absolutely schedule an appointment with Emily Kaufman! She is experienced, compassionate and wise. She is an active listener who will even remind you of things you have forgotten, just when you need to remember. She is funny and thoughtful and gentle. Emily is an active, intelligent, and compassionate listener with a calm communications style that allows me to feel understood and supported. She creates a safe environment that makes it comfortable to confide my most personal thoughts and feelings with her. Our work together has helped me deal with challenging family dynamics over several years. She picks up unspoken feelings and has valuable insights that identify core issues, beyond what I might see, and doesn't shirk to deliver messages that keep me accountable. Our discussions have led to positive changes both in the way I relate to my adult children and in the way I process their communications. Above all, I'm emotionally stronger than when we started, better able to handle the ups and down of my relationships.
Emily has helped me a lot. She is really good at tuning into what you may be struggling with but not always able to express. She can help you get through a hard time and support you in becoming more resilient and happy. She is “there” for you. Emily is very easy to talk to and a nice person in addition to being a great therapist.
Emily Kaufman is the best therapist I have ever worked with She is kind and understanding and really helped me to look at things in a different way without making me defensive or negative in any way. I got a lot out of working with her. When she told me I no longer needed to see her on a regular basis, I had ambivalent feelings. I was happy that she felt I no longer needed ongoing therapy but was sad that I would no longer be working with her. She did tell me that I could get in touch with her should I need her in the future so I didn't feel that I could never see her again if I thought I needed her. She is an incredible therapist and I would recommend her to anyone.
Emily may be the best therapist I've ever known. She excels at wisdom and kindness, just what I want from a therapist to help heal my old wounds. One of Emily’s greatest qualities is her transparency and real human beingness. I feel a deeper connection and trust with her because of it. She also always goes the extra mile to help out in practical ways, like giving me a referral to a dentist or a chiropractor that I might need which gives me a sense of relief. And she ends our meetings by saying I know where to find her if I need her. And there have been times I needed her, and she's been there. Knowing she's there has helped me to feel more secure in the world. And that's been enormous! I would give Emily all the stars available and more! I hope you're lucky enough to have her for your therapist too. :)
