Dr. Gregory Northrop, MD

Orthopedic Surgeon, Sports Medicine Specialist

Professional statement

Dr. Northrop is a board certified, sports medicine fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon. He graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in economics. After working in healthcare consulting for 5 years, Dr. Northrop returned to medical school, obtaining his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He completed a surgical internship at UC San Francisco and subsequently completed his orthopaedic residency at Stanford University. After finishing his residency, Dr. Northrop obtained additional training in sports medicine and arthroscopy at the West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation. Dr. Northrop’s specialty areas include operative and non-operative management of sports injuries, arthritis and fractures. He performs all types of knee and shoulder surgery from arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction and rotator cuff repair to partial and total joint replacement. He can therefore appropriately address whatever issue you may have with your knee or shoulder. His philosophy is that people of all ages should remain as active as possible, and as such, his goal is to restore injured or hurting patients to their previous level of function. Whenever possible, conservative non-operative approaches are tried first. When surgery is required, Dr. Northrop employs a variety of approaches, including minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques. Dr. Northrop was raised in Los Angeles and currently lives in Pasadena with his wife and three children. In his spare time he enjoys golfing, skiing, mountain biking and spending time with his family.

I had been stressing for months about a doctor telling me that I could loose the use of my right arm because of my shoulder problem. Dr.Northrop assured me that that would not happen and he gave me a prescription forphysical therapy. I was greatly relieved. I have had two surgeries from Dr. Pradhan, both very successful. I have complete trust in the staff at Risser and would advise anyone with an orthopedic problem to visit them.

Dr. Gregory Northrop is the best MD. In fact he is so good of a physician/surgeon that I actually traveled from out of state with my appointment just to be evaluated by Dr. Northrop, Because he is the most knowledgeable andtrustworthy and kind doctor that I had the pleasure to have even met on the planet. Also My parents have been visiting him and his office for over 30 years. I don’t know what I would have done without Dr. Northrop and his Staff members. He is a great doctor. Risser Orthopedics has a great group of doctors with an outstanding support staff. They disparately need to replace there Patient Portal System. I used to use it, the first error I found was that it saidthat I had no appointments on the calendar, but I had 2 upcoming visits. The last 2 times, I tried to use it, it required me to re-register to use it. I will no longer use it. It Smells!!! But the doctors and staff, thank goodness are great.

Dr. Northrup diagnosed my osteoarthritis about 18 months ago. I looked into stem cell replacement at another Orthopaedic practice. Won't work for me. They told me to go back to Northrup, they agree with his diagnosis, and plan for treatment.Dr. Northrup gets that at 68 I want to be active, ride my bike, play softball, travel etc. Both good medicine, and good interpersonal skills. Got a gel injection today. He listened to my symptoms, and helped me plan my expectations for after the injection.

Today was my last visit with Dr. Gregory Northrop for treatment, arthroscopic surgery and care for my right shoulder impingement lasting 6 months. One couldn't ask for a more caring, kind and professional doctor. His staff is also very courteousand caring. His nurse is wonderful and always ready to answer any questions. I had some allergies and reactions to some treatments and the good doctor and doctors on call saw me through those times, as well. He tells me I must continue working my right shoulder and arm to increase range of motion. I will have PT for some time. It will take a year for me to get my shoulder back all the way Dr. Northrop said. I dare say I will be better than ever! Thank you Dr. Northrop.

Being Dr. Northrop’s patient over these last five months has been the only part of a broken shoulder that I can recommend. Both prior to surgery, in the hospital, and post-op he has been encouraging and supportive. My new shoulder hashealed beautifully with minimum pain and with Physical Therapy I am expecting to recover at least 90-95 % of my former range of motion!

This was my first time visiting Risser Orthopedics (RO). I injured my right leg two weeks ago and I wanted to get it checked out. RO was recommended to me by a PT I saw five years ago for a strainedhip flexor. Things I liked: The check in was online parking was easy and plentiful and free the office staff was welcoming and pleasant. The waiting room was diverse in the needs/injuries of the patients--young, old, severe and mild appearing like mine. What I liked most: Dr. Northrop asked many questions and examined me, and sent me to Xrays. Within minutes we were looking at my xrays. I usually have to go to another office for xrays. Dr. Northrop is very clear and easy to follow with all of those long muscle vocabulary words and thankfully, my injury was mild so I just need to continue to recover and get back to my exercise routine slowly. I highly recommend him and RO. This is a great place to find out about your body when something hurts. Thanks RO! You rock! Karen M.

Dr. Northrop is an excellent surgeon! He took time to explain things to me prior to surgery. Dr. Northrop was very accommodating during my recovery. The Risser office is top notch, especially in how well they dealt with my employer's disabilitymanagement company. Kudos to the office staff for everything! Finally, it was pretty easy to get appointments and a date for my surgery.

Doctor Gregory Northrop is one of the finest (and best) doctors I have ever met. He is professional, smart, honest, caring, kind, and he made me feel like I was his ONLY patient. Dr. Gregory Northrop, and RISSER Orthopaedic, are thevery BEST. The front desk receptionist, nurse, and radiologist were all excellent, caring, and friendly. They deserve 10 stars, too. The parking was great, and no charge :-)

He was very professional and explained the MRI as best as to my ability to understand it. In light of time constraints with patients and given the patient workload; I appreciated his amiable personality. This is important. As patients, we areliterally touched by MDs and we want them to offer us hearling hands over our pain.
