Getting to know Dr. Ilyssa Kaplan

My therapeutic approach is grounded in collaboration, compassion, and clinical expertise. I work with children, teens, and adults who are facing a wide range of emotional and behavioral concerns, such as anxiety, depression, OCD, phobias, trauma, relationship difficulties, self-esteem and body image issues, and major life transitions. I also provide parenting support to help families build practical strategies for managing school-age children's behaviors at home. I hold a PsyD in School-Clinical Child Psychology from Pace University, which informs my work and commitment to evidence-based care. In my practice, I draw from both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy, tailoring treatment to each individual's needs. I believe that you bring a deep understanding of your own life, and my role is to support you with clinical knowledge, empathy, and effective tools.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapy style is warm, collaborative, and goal-oriented. I aim to create a safe and supportive space where you feel heard and respected. I draw from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy, tailoring each session to meet your unique needs. In our early sessions, we’ll work together to clarify your reasons for seeking therapy, identify your goals, and review relevant background information to help guide our work. I believe therapy is a partnership, and I encourage open communication throughout the process to ensure it remains effective and meaningful for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first therapy session, the focus will be on getting to know each other and exploring what brought you to therapy. I’ll ask about your background, current concerns, and what you’re hoping to gain from our work together. This is a space for you to share openly, ask any questions you may have, and start identifying your goals. It’s also a chance for us to see if my therapeutic style feels like a good fit for you and to begin building a supportive and collaborative foundation for future sessions. Sessions typically last around 45-50 minutes.
