Getting to know Dr. Isaac Wood

Emotional and mental disorders create undue and often, overwhelming suffering. The pain is real. It impacts the ability to have deep personal relationships, interferes with success in your job and career, and erodes at the core of your sense of self-worth and value. Together we will work to mold a plan to specifically address the issues that are preventing you from experiencing the life you want. With almost forty years of experience, I am confident that we can be successful. I deliver comprehensive care based on your individual needs. You may already be in therapy and just need medication. Or you may prefer that we work together to cover all or your treatment needs. I am flexible depending upon your needs. The journey to well being is one best taken with trusted and knowledgeable hands. I am in network with major insurance companies. Once you make your appointment with me, your insurance will be verified and you will be notified if I am or am not an eligible provider.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I appreciate how devastating mental illness will be. With that in mind, you will always be treated with sensitivity and kindness. I believe that each of us has a core child that developed when we were young. This core child understand and reacts to the environment almost like a knee-jerk reaction. However, reactions that were useful, even protective when we were children, may now cause maladaptive reactions to situations leading to problems in personal and professional life. And, these maladaptive thoughts always cause an emotional toll. So, we will work together to identify automatic thoughts and try to see how they come together to define your core self. We will problem solve different scenarios from various angles to find what you think is gong to be the most productive response in a troublesome situation. I will gently point out to you what I think you can and cannot change so you can devote your energy to worthwhile attitudes and behaviors that do not continue to drain your mental and emotional energy. I taught the neuroantomical, neurophysiological and neurochemical basis of behavior and health and illness for over thirty years at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. I have an excellent knowledge of medications and I will listen carefully to every detail of your history to determine what medication intervention is most likely to be successful for you. With every mediations I recommend, I will explain the benefits, risks and alternative treatments.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the first visit, I will take a very comprehensive history. I want to know what is currently causing your distress, the specific symptoms you are experiencing (this will guide the best medication for you), situations that are worsening or helping you to live a full life, and what you believe are the obstacles to excellent mental health. I want to get to know you personally (your personal health history, the medical history of your family, and all previous treatments you have received). To best mesh with you, I will ask you questions about your upbringing, school and work experiences, prior and current relationships. I want to know what social and environmental stressors are contributing to the problems you are experiencing. I will take a very detailed history of health symptoms you are currently experiencing. To have mental health security, I need to also work with you on lifestyle factors that may be deterring from you well being. After obtaining your history, I will provide a detailed explanation of what I believe is happening that is causing your emotional pain. For each factor, we will discuss interventions that can eliminate barriers and create opportunities for well-being. I will always tell you the pros and cons to each intervention, and together we will decide what approaches are going to work best for our given your unique situation. You are always in the driver's seat--autonomy in making your own decisions is extremely important to me. I will answer any questions for you. I may send you educational material if you want to know more detail about something we discussed. With each follow up session we will discuss each item that we identified as a barrier to your well being, how well the recommended interventions are working and where we need to change strategies to optimize success.

My appointment with Dr. Wood was wonderful. I was unsure what to expect as I’ve never met with a Psychiatrist but he listened to my concerns and made me feel understood and not criticized. For the first time, I feel properly diagnosed, and the medication plan he recommended has already significantly improved my quality of life.

I have only had one visit with Dr. Wood but I really liked him! He is very knowledgeable about medications and psychiatry. Not once did I feel rushed and I felt like I could be completely open with him about my struggles. He is super easy to get a hold of and is very flexible. I had to reschedule my first appointment due to a family matter and that was no problem. I also didn’t get charged a fee for canceling late. Before our first appointment, he took the time to call me and say that he was not in network with my insurance and gave me the option to either find another provider or be a self-pay patient and submit super bills to my insurance. I thought that was incredibly nice thing for him to look into and for him to personally call me to let me know. Overall, I really liked Dr. Wood and will continue to see him.
He was a good listener and laid out a clear plan for me to follow. He prescribed appropriate medication that no one had ever told me about that can treat two of my medical issues.
