James R Tabeling, PsyD was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Tabeling completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Dayton, followed by a Masters in Clinical Psychology at Xavier University. He then entered Wright State University, School of Professional Psychology, and completed his doctorate in 1994. His pursuit of psychoanalytic training brought him to Michigan where he was awarded a Post-doctoral Fellowship in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Detroit Psychiatric Institute. For twenty years he served as the Drug Abuse Programs Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Justice at Milan Federal Correctional Institution. In 2007 Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm recognized him for his contributions to the field by awarding him a Certificate of Tribute. During his career Dr. Tabeling has practiced in a variety of settings including hospital systems in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and New York; community mental health agencies; and his own private practice. This diversity of settings has given Dr. Tabeling the privilege of working with clients from many nationalities, religions, beliefs, and socio-economic situations. Dr. Tabeling is Catholic and a member of Christ the King Parish in Ann Arbor. While his faith forms his understanding of the world, he strives to help his patients express themselves so as to understand their life experiences from their viewpoint. Married since 1993, he is a homeschooling father of six children. He enjoys music, art, theater, camping, biking, woodworking and cooking, but often finds there isn't nearly enough time to engage in all that he enjoys.
