Life has a way of shifting beneath your feet, especially in your late 30s and 40s. The relationships, career path, and sense of self that once felt certain may suddenly feel complicated, unfamiliar, or simply no longer fitting. If you’re questioning more than you expected to be at this stage, you’re not doing something wrong. You’re in the middle of something real. I’m Dr. Janine O’Brien, a licensed psychologist in New York and Florida working with women navigating the complexity of midlife transitions. I specialize in helping women who are high-functioning on the outside but internally struggling; women who are rethinking relationships, grieving friendships that have shifted, questioning career paths, and trying to figure out who they are outside of who they’ve always been for everyone else. My work draws on relational, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral approaches, which means we’ll look at both the patterns rooted in your history and the practical tools that help you make different choices now. Sessions are 45 minutes and held virtually, making it accessible wherever you are in New York or Florida. If attachment patterns, people-pleasing, or past relational dynamics are showing up in your life - in dating, marriage, family, or friendship - that’s also an area of focus in my work with clients over the years. My clients are self-aware, motivated, and ready for change. If that is you, I'd love to connect.

Getting to know Dr. Janine O'Brien

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm and validating, but I’ll also be honest with you. I believe real growth requires both; feeling genuinely understood and being willing to look clearly at the patterns that are keeping you stuck. In our work together, we’ll explore the roles you were placed into within your family system early on, how those roles shaped the way you move through relationships and the world, and which parts of that story still fit and which ones you’re ready to put down. I help clients get clear on their values and goals and find ways to actually live in and toward them. Not in a way, however, that ignores real barriers, whether systemic, cultural, or circumstantial, but in a way that works within the reality of your life. My clients leave sessions feeling seen, more self-aware, and equipped to make choices that are genuinely theirs.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before scheduling an initial session, a free 15 minute consultation call is scheduled. This gives us the opportunity to briefly discuss what you're looking for and if working together would be a good fit. During this call, I'll be able to tell you more about my practice and answer any questions you might have for me. The initial session is approximately 60 minutes and during that time, I'll be getting to know more about you and your history. We will also begin discussing goals for our work together. Following the initial session, weekly sessions are 45 minutes.
