Javier Luna, LCP

Psychologist
CA
I'm a licensed clinical psychologist with 14 years of experience. I trained in primary care and still work in health care settings, which shapes how I think about mental health: not as something separate from the rest of your life, but as deeply connected to your sleep, your physical health, your work, and your family. I pay attention to all of it. I work with adults dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and the stress that comes with managing chronic health conditions like diabetes. I also see many people dealing with work stress and burnout. I've held leadership roles in health care for more than ten years, so I know that kind of pressure firsthand. My style is direct, practical, and relational. In our first session, we'll figure out what's going on and what you want to change. From there, we'll set clear goals and a date to check on progress. Some people need a few focused sessions. Others need more time. We'll decide based on how you're doing, not based on a default weekly schedule. I'm bilingual and have provided therapy in Spanish for most of my career. Sessions are virtual for adults anywhere in California. If something has felt off for a while, that's reason enough to reach out.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first session is mostly just a chance to get to know each other a little. I'll ask about what's been going on, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping might be different. By the end, we'll have a clearer sense of where you want to go and how we might get there together. I'll be honest with you, and I'll genuinely want to hear your honest take too. Most sessions will end with something small and concrete to try before we meet again. Nothing that requires a major overhaul of your life. How often we meet is something we'll figure out together. A lot of people find it helpful to start weekly, then gradually space things out as they start to feel steadier. We'll revisit that as we go. Sessions are by video, in English or Spanish. It helps to find somewhere private and quiet if you can.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions are by video and last about an hour. We start by reviewing what's happened since we last met — what you tried, what helped, and where things got stuck. From there, we choose one or two things to focus on: a specific situation you're navigating, a recurring dynamic you want to understand better, or a skill you're working to build. I like to adapt my approach with each client because each individual and their situation is unique, and also to adjust the focus as different needs arise. Every three to four sessions, we zoom out — reviewing what's changed, whether your goals have shifted, and whether our approach needs to adjust. The structure is consistent, but the work inside it follows where you actually are.
