Getting to know Dr. Jennifer Shindman

Training & Education: Dr. Jennifer Shindman is a licensed psychologist and a certified school psychologist. She earned her Master's and Doctoral degrees from St. John's University. Dr. Shindman has extensive training and experience in evidence-based treatments, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based approaches, and dialectical behavioral skills training (DBT). She is an Associate Fellow of the Albert Ellis Institute and received extensive training in the delivery of rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT). Clinical Experience: Dr. Shindman has experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in various settings. She has worked in community mental health centers, outpatient hospital settings, and in schools. She worked as a clinical supervisor at St. John’s University training doctoral students in the delivery of evidence-based -interventions. Approach to treatment: In treatment, Dr. Shindman ensures that her clients feel safe by creating a warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment. Next, she works with her clients to create and define therapeutic goals. Once therapeutic goals are collaboratively established, Dr. Shindman helps her clients identify the relationship between their thoughts, emotions, and behavior, laying the foundation for CBT and REBT. She then works with her clients on implementing strategies to help them better cope with their negative emotions. In working with Dr. Shindman, clients learn to identify why they are struggling and are empowered to make the necessary changes to live a more fulfilling and meaningful life. I mainly treat adult patients, but I will treat adolescents 14 and up on a case-by-case basis.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Shindman uses an active, direct, and goal-driven approach to help her clients learn the skills they need to improve their lives. She helps client to gain insight into why they may be stuck, and helps them learn how to make long lasting life changes. Dr. Shindman often incorporates teaching mindfulness skills to clients in her practice. Mindfulness is a way of paying attention on purpose, nonjudgmentally, to yourself and your surroundings. Dr. Shindman has experience working with individuals with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, learning disabilities, obsessive compulsive disorder, anger, procrastination and perfectionism, and relationship and family problems. Dr. Shindman has experience working with diverse clients from various backgrounds. She welcomes clients of any background, faith, and orientation. She is mindful to each client’s unique experience and carefully creates and implements interventions that are culturally sensitive.
