Getting to know Dr. Joel Block

Note: Dr. Block is not on insurance panels and is an out-of-network (OON) provider. If you have coverage for OON providers, Dr. Block will provide you with a paid statement for you to file with your insurer. Joel D. Block, Ph.D., earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Syracuse University. He is an award-winning psychologist-recognized for excellence in couple therapy-practicing couple and sex therapy on Long Island, New York. He is Board Certified in Couple Therapy by the American Board of Professional Psychology. Dr. Block is a senior psychologist on the staff of the Northwell Health System and Assistant Clinical Professor (Psychology/Psychiatry) at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Couple and Family Psychology) and served for twenty years as the training supervisor of the Sexuality and Couples Center at the Northwell Health System. Dr. Block is the author of numerous books on love and sex, his specialty. His position on therapy: he is not neutral about relationships-he is biased. He is for the healing process and does his best to prevent breakups. He is admittedly impatient with finger-pointing and strongly drawn to solutions. He views the person or persons sitting with him as collaborators working toward a win-win goal. By relationships, he does not limit his interest or energy to marriage; his work includes friendships, parent-child relationships, and your relationship with yourself.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I view the relationships in our lives as critical to our well-being. This refers to couples, of course, but I see it more broadly including friendships and critically, the relationship we have with ourselves. It's all about connecting, and staying connected, which can be chalenging. The challenge has been my life's work.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical approach involves being fully present and active in session. What takes place in the session is important, but your life experience is not in the session and will more likely improve if you are taking what you learn into your life outside of therapy. I am there to help you do that successfully.
