Dr. Jonathan Anslow, PsyD

Psychologist
11430 N Community House Rd, 250, Charlotte, NC
Hello there! I'm Dr. Anslow, and I've been helping the people of Charlotte and the surrounding areas for over 16 years since I moved here from San Diego in 2006. Originally from Virginia, I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Virginia and went on to earn a Doctorate of Psychology (Psy.D.) from The George Washington University in D.C. When I'm not in my therapist role, I am a husband and a father. I enjoy traveling with my family, going to shows, making playlists (what we used to call ?Mix Tapes? back in the day), playing video games, and I am still going strong on the soccer scene as a defender (imagine that!). Growing up in the '80s, it gives me a certain kind of nostalgic joy when revisiting movies and content from that era. I am a collector of video games and geeky paraphernalia and a huge Star Wars fan. I welcome you to schedule a 10-15 minute Meet & Greet to have the opportunity to ask me anything and get a good sense of whether you think we might work well together. Thanks for reading and Be Well!

What should a new client know about working with you?

I want you to know that I am not a huge fan of labels. As a psychologist I DO consider that information, but my task, as I see it, is to understand who YOU are in your own unique context. I am of the opinion that labels have the potential to be quite limiting and may become a core part of your identity, for better or worse. Certainly it can be helpful to have a broader context for understanding the nature of our difficulties, but it behooves each and every one of us to consider other aspects of our functioning, i.e. our strengths, so that we might offset our more problematic areas. I, for one, have an ADHD brain and have learned over the years how to work within my limitations, to find the proper supports, and to lean harder into what I do well. I strive to help you find that line between acceptance of what IS when weighed against the challenge of pushing yourself to get where you WANT things to be. If we’re not careful, complete acceptance can turn into a form of complacency and feeling “stuck”, bored, unchallenged, and dissatisfied overall, whereas pushing to get somewhere or to attain some new level or goal can turn into a general lack of self-acceptance and chronic disappointment if you don’t accomplish that task. I see my work as a process. A journey. However long it takes is variable and determined by a number of factors. I can never predict how someone will take to me, or know where you are already in your journey, but I am dedicated to helping you attain progress with your goals. The establishment of said goals is one of the first tasks for us to accomplish in the initial intake. When we have a very clear sense of where we want to go we can start to map out the route and then take the necessary steps to get there.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am a generalist practitioner who has worked with all kinds of mental health issues. I see folks for Individual Psychotherapy primarily, but can incorporate family members into a session if needed. I will meet with Pre-adolescents as young as 10 years of age and meet with Adolescents, Young Adults, and Older Adults.
