What should a new client know about working with you?

I’m here to listen to whatever concerns you have, and develop a healthy productive working relationship so that we can address both short and long term mental health goals. If this is your first time visiting a psychiatrist I understand it can be somewhat intimidating, no need to worry however as my training and experience will guide us through the first visit. If you’ve had previous mental health treatment I will listen carefully to understand what approaches have been tried in the past to identify what may be useful going forward. It is my privilege to provide care to patients from all backgrounds in a non-judgemental setting that makes them feel comfortable and safe, and have experience and enjoy working with LGBTQ populations as well as people who identify as religious or are experiencing some kind of transition in their faith or religious beliefs.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

At the first visit, I start by taking a detailed, comprehensive history. This gives us a solid foundation to work from and allows us to make the most informed recommendations for your care going forward. At the end of the first visit, we come up with an initial plan that holistically addresses all the factors that contribute to mental health like sleep, regular physical activity, diet, and social interaction. I take into account your preferences for using medications and try to use the minimal amount of medications possible (especially with controlled substances). Reviewing your current medications can uncover any side effects or interactions with other medications. My treatment plans consider non-medication options as well, especially if medications have not been helpful in the past. For example, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Spravato therapy can often make a difference where medications and therapy have not. As a physician, every visit will assess possible medical causes of symptoms and I may recommend working with a primary care provider or a specialist to rule out non-mental health causes of your symptoms. After the first visit, follow ups are typically with one of our nurse practitioners who can consult with me whenever needed. Follow up visits with me are possible on a case-by-case basis.
