Psychologist
240 9th St, Del Mar, CA
I use a non-confrontational, self-empowering approach to therapy — one that is individualized from the start and adjusts as your goals evolve. From the very first session, I offer practical suggestions to help you gain insight, strengthen your coping strategies, and move forward. Therapy, in my view, should be both empathetic and grounded in science, and always responsive to what you are actually trying to accomplish. I work with adults and adolescents across a wide range of mental health conditions, including those that have not responded well to prior treatment. If you’ve been through treatment before without the results you hoped for, it may be worth approaching your situation with a fresh perspective and a different set of tools. I hold a Doctorate in Psychology (PsyD) and a postdoctoral Master’s in Clinical Psychopharmacology (MSCP) — a combination that is relatively uncommon and practically useful. It means I can engage substantively with both the psychological and pharmacological dimensions of care. I came to psychology by a longer route than most, with earlier years in biological sciences, economics, computers, and teaching, which allows for a cross-disciplinary approach to my work within a bio-psycho-social model. I am also an Adjunct Professor at Alliant University, a Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), and a Star Behavioral Health Care Provider for military personnel and families. I have peer-reviewed publications in grief and economics, and I give continuing education talks on ketamine. My volunteer work has included the Red Cross Disaster Mental Health program, Survivors of Suicide Loss, SMART Recovery, and the San Diego and California Psychological Associations.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy should be compassionate and grounded in science, yet always responsive to the goals of the individual. I can better help you find ways to help you take charge of your own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. My style tends to be empathetic and direct. In general, sessions are goal-oriented, and we will work collaboratively to identify those goals, adjusting as we go. I try to be clear about what we are doing and why. I use a range of evidence-based methods and try to be attentive to how biological, cognitive, behavioral, and relational factors interact. Depending on your situation, the treatment approaches may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT), Metacognitive Therapy, Habit-Reversal Training, EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT), trauma-informed therapy, HRV biofeedback, somatic approaches, clinical psychopharmacology consultation, ketamine-assisted therapy, and SPACE. I can also provide substantive psychiatric medication education as a clinical psychopharmacologist. With your permission, I can coordinate directly with your prescribing physician on issues such as response to medications, drug interactions, side-effects, and treatment progress. If you are seeing Dr. Papp for medication management or ketamine treatment, coordinated care can be seamless and frequent My areas of emphasis are: Anxiety (generalized, panic, social, health) and stress OCD and body-focused repetitive behaviors Trauma and PTSD Grief, traumatic grief, and suicide loss Depression, including treatment-resistant depression Bipolar disorder ADHD and executive functioning Alcohol moderation and abstinence Sleep disorders Relationship issues Life transitions Caregiver stress

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I try to accommodate the patient's preference for location, date, and time. Initial sessions are often available within 1 week. Initial Session Your initial 90‑minute visit is a quiet, unhurried time to talk. We will review your presenting concerns, relevant history, and prior treatment. By the end of the visit, I will share my clinical impressions and we will agree on a treatment plan with clear goals. Follow-up Sessions Ongoing 50-minute appointments are standard; Patients may request an extended 75-minute session. The frequency of sessions is based on your preferences and clinical considerations. I try to accommodate your preferred session date and time. Ongoing Assessment Periodic evaluations review clinical progress and assess therapeutic goals to ensure your care remains responsive to your evolving needs. Integrated Care With your consent, I coordinate with other treating providers — including Dr. Papp and Dr. Ariane Myers at the clinic. Family involvement is available if clinically appropriate and desired.
