"Dr. Khaled Tawansy is a Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon and Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics. He operates clinical practices in Southern and Central California that are dedicated to managing Pediatric and adult retinal disorders, including trauma, Retinal Detachment, Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), Diabetic Retinopathy, surgical complications, Uveitis, macular degeneration, and hereditary vitreoretinopathies. He often lectures at meetings and teaches at the university in California and internationally. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering at John Hopkins and his Doctorate of Medicine with Honors at the University of Michigan. He has completed residencies and fellowships at well-recognized institutions, including the University of California, Irvine, and the Harvard School of Medicine. During his training at Vanderbilt and UBC, he joined the teaching faculty and founded pediatric retinal programs. He received Faculty Teacher of the Year and Surgical Instructor of the Year awards from Vanderbilt before the University of Southern California recruited him in 2001. After 5 years leading the pediatric retina service at USC, he founded the Children's Retina Institute and Arroyo Vision Care to continue advancing his findings. He pioneered Pars Plana and Open Sky Vitrectomy surgical techniques for retinal detachments associated with trauma, ROP, Stickler syndrome, and much more. He has led studies that have proven the benefits of Anti-VEGF therapy with Avastin in Aggressive Posterior ROP. His enthusiasm for eye care has led to many accomplishments and awards, including the development of the Raymond Renaissance Center for eye surgery and education in Old Town Pasadena. Other accomplishments include, but are not limited to, his presidency of Golden State Eye Care, his role as an adjunct clinical professor at Touro College of Medicine, and more. He accepts challenging patients and remains accessible by cell when he is not at practice."
