I’m Dr. Khalid Brown, a licensed psychologist with nearly 20 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. My primary focus is psychological and diagnostic assessment, helping individuals and families find answers related to ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other emotional or behavioral concerns. I believe an evaluation should provide more than a diagnosis. My goal is to help you understand how you or your child thinks, learns, processes information, and experiences the world. I combine comprehensive testing with careful attention to your history, concerns, strengths, and day-to-day experiences to develop a clear and individualized picture. I frequently work with adults who have spent years wondering whether ADHD or autism may explain lifelong difficulties with attention, organization, relationships, sensory experiences, or feeling different from others. I also work closely with parents seeking answers about their child’s development, learning, attention, behavior, or emotional well-being. Evaluations may also help identify learning disabilities and provide recommendations for appropriate school, college, or workplace supports. My approach is warm, collaborative, and straightforward. I understand that seeking an evaluation can feel overwhelming, particularly when you have been searching for answers for a long time. I strive to make the process comfortable and understandable from the first appointment through feedback and recommendations. For clients who desire it, I can also incorporate a Christian perspective while respecting each individual’s values and beliefs. My goal is for you to leave the evaluation process with greater clarity, a better understanding of strengths and challenges, and practical recommendations for moving forward.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is warm, conversational, and straightforward. I want clients to feel comfortable being themselves rather than feeling like they have to give the “right” answer or present themselves a certain way. Whether we are meeting for therapy or an evaluation, I take time to listen, understand your concerns, and look at the bigger picture of what may be contributing to the challenges you are experiencing. In therapy, I take a practical and collaborative approach. We may explore patterns in your thoughts, emotions, relationships, behaviors, and past experiences while also focusing on strategies you can use in everyday life. Depending on your needs, I may incorporate approaches such as cognitive behavioral strategies, mindfulness, emotional regulation skills, problem-solving, and exploration of relationships and life experiences. I believe therapy should have a purpose, and we will work together to identify goals and regularly consider whether what we are doing is helping you move toward them. During psychological evaluations, I try to make testing feel as comfortable and understandable as possible. I do not view people simply as a collection of test scores. Testing is one part of the process, along with your history, experiences, strengths, concerns, and observations. My goal is to connect all of that information in a way that makes sense and provides useful answers. I also recognize that many people come to therapy or testing after feeling misunderstood, dismissed, or unsure why certain things have been difficult for them. You can expect me to ask questions, listen carefully, explain my thinking, and be direct when needed. For clients who want faith to be part of their care, I am comfortable integrating a Christian perspective. This is always based on your preferences and is never required.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The process begins with an initial appointment where we discuss what brings you in, your current concerns, relevant history, and what you hope to gain from working together. I want to understand not only the symptoms or challenges you are experiencing, but also how they are affecting your daily life, relationships, school, work, or overall well-being. For psychological evaluations, the first appointment helps determine what questions we need to answer and which assessments will be most useful. Testing is individualized based on your needs and may evaluate areas such as attention, executive functioning, autism, learning and academic skills, cognitive abilities, memory, personality, emotional functioning, or trauma. Testing may take place over one or more appointments depending on the type of evaluation. After testing is completed, I review all available information, including test results, your history, behavioral observations, and information from parents, partners, teachers, or other sources when appropriate. We then meet for a feedback session where I explain the findings in understandable language, discuss any diagnoses when applicable, answer questions, and provide practical recommendations and next steps. My goal is for you to leave with greater clarity about both your strengths and the areas where additional support may be helpful. For therapy clients, sessions are conversational and collaborative. We typically begin by discussing what has happened since our previous meeting and identifying the concerns that feel most important that day. Sessions may include exploring thoughts and emotions, identifying patterns, developing coping or communication skills, problem-solving, and working toward goals established together. There is no expectation that you arrive knowing exactly what to say. I help guide the conversation and adjust the process based on your needs, comfort level, and goals.
