He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Maimonides Medical Center where he also served as a chief resident. He completed an orthopaedic spinal surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. He is board eligible in orthopaedic surgery and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Hwang's clinical practice is focused on the treatment of pediatric and adult spinal disorders including degenerative conditions of the spine (disc degeneration, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis), spinal trauma, complex revision surgeries (failed back and flatback), spinal deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis), and in the use of minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Hwang's research interests include clinical outcomes studies to examine the aging population with spinal disorders, the biomechanics of spinal deformities, as well as the development of cutting edge technology for the treatment of various spinal disorders such as video-assisted micorendoscopic minimally invasive techniques.
