About Dr. Kirsten Poehling-Monaghan
Kirsten Poehling-Monaghan, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine, knee, and shoulder surgery, as well as general orthopedics and fracture care.
She served as an Assistant Team Physician for the Philadelphia Eagles professional football team, the Philadelphia Phillies professional baseball team, and the Philadelphia Flyers professional hockey team, as well as the Villanova University Wildcats and the St Joe’s University Hawks, and is currently the official Team Surgeon for the Washington DC Divas professional women’s football team, as well as a number of high schools throughout Montgomery, Charles, and Prince George’s counties. She has given presentations at a number of national conventions, speaking about her research in sports medicine and hip surgery.
Dr. Monaghan completed her Fellowship training in Sports Medicine at The Rothman Institute of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Prior to this, she completed her orthopedic residency training at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
During her medical training at the George Washington University School of Medicine she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society. As an undergraduate at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, she graduated with high honors and was awarded the Walter J. Hume research fellowship award.
Dr. Monaghan specializes in sports injuries of the shoulder, knee, and ankle, as well as injuries unique to the female athlete, including patellar instability and ACL tears.
A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, she enjoys tennis, snowboarding, and spending time with her husband and two young sons.

Dr. Poehling-Monaghan and her staff were terrific- they were friendly, efficient, took time to listen, and responded to my concerns. Overall, I felt like my health issues were taken seriously by competent professionals. I would highly recommend their practice. I waited about 45 minutes before being brought to an exam room, so I would also recommend preparing for a bit of a wait.

Dr. Monaghan was worth the wait. I have been waiting for almost three years to get relief for my wrist and knee since my injury at work. She actually explained what therapy should go with my symptoms... the first person ever. All of the questions she asked were used to come up with a treatment plan that actually makes sense. I wish I would have found her a few years ago. My husband was even impressed with her intuitiveness and “makes sense” diagnosis.

Dr Monaghan is the best orthopedic surgeon I've met. Unlike my previous ortho, she actually did tests and found that I've had a slap tear for a year, which she suspected after my first visit. My previous ortho gave me cortisone and pt suspecting a rotator cuff tear. It feels great to actually have answers now and I'm happy to have her fix my shoulder with surgery. She has great bed side manner. She listened to my wife's concerns as well. Very happy patient.

This was the second time I saw Dr. Monaghan, and it was just a follow-up to an MRI that I had done. I work in a doctor's office, so I understand how quickly an office can fall behind schedule. And certainly, it's almost always a conglomeration of front end and back end factors that sometimes can't be avoided. I don't mind having to wait for an appointment. I also understand that given what I imagine to be the scope of injuries that Dr. Monaghan sees, my injury is not a big deal. I don't have chronic pain, in day to day life I have 99% function, I'm not an athlete on the benches because of what's happened to by shoulder/knee/etc. That being said, I am still one of her patients and I was disappointed that I was seen by Dr. Monaghan for 3 minutes, maybe 5 minutes tops. Maybe there wasn't much to be said about my MRI and steps moving forward. Even still, my few minutes with Dr. Monaghan felt rushed. More importantly, during that time I did not get the impression that she gave much thought to my concerns. I left the office feeling like I should not have bothered coming in the first place. Again, I work with docs so I get it - not all docs are going to be warm and friendly or are going to ask you about your day. I just wish that Dr. Monaghan was able to talk with me about my concerns for more than a few minutes. Perhaps on a different day under different circumstances things might have been different. This was just my experience!
