Getting to know Dr. Laura Derubeis-Byrne

In my clinical work, I seek to provide a safe, supportive space, employing a client-centered, eclectic therapeutic approach that starts where you are. Together, we explore aspects of your life, experiences, and relationships that may not align with your needs and goals. Addressing these areas can enhance your ability to function at your fullest potential. With a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University, my therapeutic intention is to support you as you step into a more holistic and authentic version of yourself, helping you actualize your fullest potential.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic intention is to support you as you step into a more holistic and authentic version of yourself helping you to actualize your fullest potential. I employ a psychodynamic/Jungian framework, augmented with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma focused-CBT techniques when clinically relevant. With couples I use an emotion-focused therapy approach, with the understanding that communication barriers can be resolved by identifying the core needs of the individuals and the couple. I am ENM, Poly, kink and LGBTQIA+ aware.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I specialize in the incorporation of mindfulness practices including somatic resourcing and experiencing techniques and the utilization of eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) for embodied trauma.

Dr. Laura helped with my situations in ways that at one point didn't seem as possible. There was never a moment that I felt that she was talking down to me or criticizing in ways that felt judgemental. She is very kind and supportive and worth talking to. Can't thank her enough for listening and talking to me to teach me different and/or better ways to handle situations. A positive impact has been made.
I am very thankful to have met Dr. Laura. She gave me the space to essentially dump years of disorganized trauma onto her in our first one or two sessions. Dr. Laura truly listened. She took notes, asked clarifying questions, and talked about things from previous sessions in future ones. I didn't have to retell everything which was refreshing and allowed more time for therapy. We covered aspects such as romantic relationships, career adversity, family adversity, guilt, shame, and aspects of my military career. Her approach is professional, personable, and kind without being patronizing. I highly recommend Dr. Laura to anyone.
Laura was great during the several months we worked together. With her gentil and supportive approach she helped me reflect and identify important elements. She was always very accessible and flexible when we needed to communicate and plan sessions. She was always punctual and focused to get the most of our time together. I'm grateful to have worked with Laura.
Dr. Laura is a kind, insightful, and understanding therapist. She creates a calm and positive environment for her patients to feel safe expressing themselves. I highly recommend her for anyone looking for an experienced therapist to help with any of life’s challenges!
I worked very happily with Dr. DeRubeis-Byrne over a long period of time and only paused treatment for financial reasons on my end. She was kind, non-judgmental, highly intelligent, and gentle in her approach. She adapted quickly to my needs and was able to craft our sessions to effectively address whatever I needed most in each moment. I feel very grateful to have worked with her and would love to go back as soon as I get my insurance sorted!
