Getting to know Dr. Laura Kohberger

For some people, therapy may immediately offer an inviting space to share thoughts and feelings that they might not feel safe sharing in other relationships. Others may view therapy as a sign of failure in not being able to solve life problems on their own. I have worked with clients at both ends of this spectrum, including the most reluctant beginners. I believe that therapy can serve as another avenue to develop greater self-awareness and break free from painful cycles. I specialize in working with people who find it hard to know what they want in life and easily lose themselves with others. I also work with those who struggle to find love and may suffer from feelings of worthlessness and emptiness. I understand that being vulnerable can be scary, but I have also witnessed and experienced the freedom that comes from allowing oneself to be vulnerable. Our work together can provide an opportunity to reach greater potential, engage more authentically in your relationships, or discover your barriers, patterns, and motivations. I have seen many clients pivot from a position of surviving to thriving-feeling more alive and free. My practice has a strong focus on examining interpersonal relationships, behavioral patterns, and the lasting effects of early life experiences. I am particularly adept at working with trauma, anxiety, depression, destructive habits, relationship conflicts, posttraumatic stress, personality disorder conflicts, emotion regulation, and family issues. I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the New School, which informs my approach and commitment to evidence-based, compassionate care.

I had never been to a therapist before I started seeing Dr. Kohberger and felt very uncertain about how to approach our appointments and how they could help me. Dr. Kohberger was amazing at helping me feel comfortable sharing at the beginning and helping me identify things we could work on together. As time went on, she was also great at knowing when and how to challenge me on my interpretations and to help me to see things differently. I ended up seeing her for several years, and during that time was able to work to change the relationship dynamics with my partner, family and friends in important ways. I very highly recommend her.
I started working with Dr Kohberger in a period of my life where I felt very lost and was incredibly depressed and closed off. She was beyond instrumental in me getting back to myself and I always looked forward to our sessions. She always had a great approach to open me up and she made me feel so safe and comfortable with some of my darker emotions.
Laura is the best professional I saw during a terribly traumatic time. She patiently and calmly counseled me through a number of situations that, for me, were life altering. I would highly recommend her.
