Getting to know Dr. Madeline Ofina

Hello, my name is Dr. Madeline Ofina. I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University, where I also earned my Master's in Clinical Psychology. I completed my Bachelor's degree at the University of California, Davis, and completed an internship in Psychology at the John D. Dingell Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Detroit. My focus is helping members of the BIPOC community heal, find deeper alignment in their lives, and thrive. I have a particular interest in working with adult children of immigrants. My work is integrative and informed by evidence-based modalities such as Mindfulness, Person-Centered, Multicultural, Spiritual, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I also integrate knowledge from indigenous philosophy, spirituality, ethnopolitical psychology, liberation psychology, and the power of reclaiming connection to our culture and community.

What should a new client know about working with you?

After you schedule an appointment, I will send you the onboarding paperwork and a welcome email. The onboarding paperwork will include practice policies and consent to treatment; this paperwork must be completed before the first session. My style in session is semi-structured. You will have time to talk and share in the session; however, I will also ask you questions to help you gain insight, provide psychoeducation to help you understand, and teach skills to help you feel confident in addressing your emotional needs. I will provide you with assignments between sessions and challenging questions to help you better understand yourself. My work is both personalized and culturally informed. My specialty is working with members of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) community, taking into account the various cultural backgrounds and identities that impact personal experiences.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I start most therapy sessions by asking a person how their week was, discussing progress from the week before, and their homework assignment. We can connect to the larger struggles impacting their daily lives by asking a person about their week. Instead of focusing on diagnosis and symptoms, I focus on how those symptoms impact their lives and how they achieve the life they want for themselves. I integrate mindfulness and grounded meditation skills to help with distress and skill-building through role-play during talk therapy.
