Dr. Shomer earned a bachelor’s degree with Highest Departmental Honors from UCLA and graduated Summa Cum Laude(top 5%). He was chosen to be a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honors Society. He was also the UCLA Student Commencement Speaker. Dr. Shomer was awarded a full academic scholarship from UCLA School of Medicine., where he earned both MD and PhD degrees. While in graduate training at UCLA, he was awarded the National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Health, the Outstanding Graduate Student Award, and a Certificate of Recognition from the California Legislature Assembly. His doctoral dissertation research in neuroscience focused on cutting-edge neuronal repair mechanisms in the adult brain. Dr. Shomer later studied the role of stem cells as a possible avenue of repair of eye disease in the adult retina. Dr. Shomer then completed residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Jules Stein Institute at the UCLA School of Medicine; annually recognized as the Best Ophthalmology Program and Hospital, respectively, west of the Mississippi. He is also Board Certified in Ophthalmology and is a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at Los Angeles County USC Hospital. Dr Shomer specializes in advanced techniques in cataract surgery and customized premium lens implants. He teaches cataract surgery at the Doheny Eye Institute residency program. He also performs comprehensive ophthalmology including: glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye, eye pain, eye infections, pterygium (carnosidad), eye exams, and eyelid disorders. What distinguishes Dr. Shomer is that he gives each patient the quality of care that he provides to his own family members. He is the proud father of three beautiful children, and he understands the need to go above and beyond for each of his patients.
