Psychologist
19712 MacArthur Blvd, Ste 110, Irvine, CA
I’m a bilingual, bicultural licensed psychologist who works with adults and couples experiencing anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, and major life transitions. I bring warmth, curiosity, and genuine care to my work, and I take the time to understand you as a whole person—not just the symptoms that brought you to therapy. My approach goes beyond simply managing symptoms. Together, we explore the patterns, relationships, and experiences that may be shaping how you feel and respond today, including ways of coping that may have once been helpful but are no longer working for you. I help clients make connections they may not have recognized before and develop practical tools to better manage emotions, stress, and difficult situations. I integrate evidence-based approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), DBT-informed skills, EMDR, and psychodynamic and relational approaches, tailoring treatment to each person rather than using the same approach with everyone. I provide therapy in both English and Spanish and bring a culturally responsive perspective to my work.

Getting to know Maria Del Carmen Gutierrez Zapata

I’m a bilingual, bicultural licensed psychologist who works with adults and couples experiencing anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, and major life transitions. I bring warmth, curiosity, and genuine care to my work, and I take the time to understand you as a whole person—not just the symptoms that brought you to therapy. What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, engaged, and collaborative. I’m genuinely curious about who you are and work hard to understand your experiences, relationships, and the patterns that may be contributing to what you’re going through. Therapy with me includes both understanding and practical change. We may explore where certain reactions or patterns come from and how they may have helped you adapt in the past, while also developing tools to help you regulate emotions and respond differently in the present. I tend to be active in sessions—I ask questions, point out connections and patterns you may not have noticed, and offer feedback rather than simply listening. My goal is for therapy to help you better understand yourself while creating changes that feel meaningful and sustainable. I especially like that last paragraph for you because it differentiates you from the generic “warm, compassionate, safe space” profiles without making you sound overly technical. It communicates the part of your Psychology Today profile that is actually distinctive: you make connections, identify patterns, help the person understand where they came from, and then integrate tools for change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I begin by taking time to understand what brings you to therapy, what is happening in your life now, and the experiences and relationships that may be contributing to how you feel. We’ll talk about what you would like to change and identify the areas that feel most important to address. As therapy progresses, sessions are collaborative and tailored to what you need. We may explore recurring emotional or relationship patterns, make connections between past experiences and present reactions, and look at ways of coping that may have once been helpful but are no longer serving you. I also integrate practical, evidence-based strategies when helpful, including tools from CBT and DBT for managing emotions and changing unhelpful patterns, as well as EMDR when appropriate for trauma-related concerns. My goal is to balance deeper understanding with concrete tools you can use outside of therapy, so that the changes we work toward carry into your everyday life.
