About Dr. Maria Sophocles
Dr. Sophocles understands the physical issues women face from their teens through post-menopause. "Women of any age want a physician they can trust," she says. "I spend time with my patients so they can share intimate issues and complex problems."
A graduate of Duke University, Dr. Sophocles earned her Doctor of Medicine from Philadelphia University and Thomas Jefferson University. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Johns Hopkins University and Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where she learned the importance of empathy.
"A patient's trust begins when she senses you care," she says.
Throughout her over 20 years as a board-certified Ob/Gyn, Dr. Sophocles has upheld the Hopkins standards of clinical excellence and innovation. Always thinking outside the box, she promoted the early development of umbilical cord blood banks and researched non-invasive ways to detect abnormal fetal chromosomes. Now, she focuses on advancing non-invasive gynecological procedures to treat vaginal dryness and uterine bleeding.

The experience I had is one I would never want anyone to have. After 3.5 hours I starting feeling dizzy so I walked out. There was no communication from staff just short answers and abuse. I will never ever return to this practice which told me my care would not be covered by insurance. No patient should ever receive this treatment. Waste of time. Got nothing accomplished. Next month I’m told they do not take insurance. I needed a gynecological exam and was told this doctor no longer did exams. WHAT??? Why am I here?

Save your time. It takes a lot for me to write a negative review. Obviously do right by you, but don't say I didn't warn you. They have a system where you get a text when they are ready for you. I had a time set for my appointment and they did not call me inside for over an hour until I went inside. Several people have complained about wait times on the internet. Once I got there, I was stuck for a half hour with a nurse, who told me not to change into a gown and that the doctor would speak to me and determine if that was necessary. I've never been to a gyno where they look down there. I finally got to see the doctor, where I had to orally repeat my history again, she leaves me to change (go fig!) for 20 minutes. After 1.5 hours of waiting, she looks at me for 0.5 seconds, visually diagnoses me and then begins to jump and sell me on some laser treatment. Prescribes a ton of meds as I ask her what to do before follow up AND tries to schedule me for an annual uninformed as well.

The doctor gave a treatment plan. Nurse at the desk said oh doctor is not aware of change in treatment plan. We order medicine ourself so not sure when will it come. I requested if I can wait to discuss alternative. She said kindly leave for now. Dr cannot meet.
Next appointment was not available with subordinate till next 5 week??!
I am suffering.
Doctors gave treatment options clearly ; had good listening years on but cannot provide treatment in next 5 -6 week as they wanna order medicine themselves

I appreciate her ability to problem solve, finding many ways to address a problem, so that I have a say in the course of treatment. I was extremely pleased with Dr.Sophocles. She was knowledgeable, friendly, encouraged any questions or concerns, offered many ideas for problems. The appointment was comfortable and not rushed. I would absolutely go back to her.
On the downside, I waited in my car at least 45 minutes without additional contact from the office. I finally called the office and was advised the doctor was running behind. I feel like they should have communicated the delay to me while I waited. My appt was for 11:30. I did not see the doctor until about 12:40. However, in the end, it was worth the wait. She was wonderful.

This was my first time seeing Dr. Sophocles. Her and her team are extremely friendly and were a pleasure to meet. The office is clean and welcoming, and they took my appt on time. She took time to listen to all of my concerns and had answered all my questions. I did not feel rushed through the appt. She did not dismiss my feelings or the way that I explained how my body felt using a certain product like other doctors have in the past. She also was not forceful at all as other doctors can sometimes be. I was very nervous going into the appt because I was getting a minor procedure done but Dr. Sophocles walked me through the whole thing, it took about 1 second to complete and was overall a great experience. She voiced her recommendations that she felt would work best for me and she really cares about helping out her patients. I highly recommend seeing Dr. Sophocles!
