What should a new client know about working with you?

Marty Giffin is a board-certified clinical psychologist from Roseville, California who works with youth, adults, and couples who struggle in relationships with life partners, peers and/or superiors creating issues that manifest at home, school and/or work. Dr. Giffin has extensive experience with cognitive-behavioral therapy and has been a board-certified psychologist for over 35 years. Dr. Giffin’s approach is rooted in System Theory which always includes in-depth exploration of the environments/systems in which the individual experiences struggle. Dr. Giffin did his undergraduate work at Ohio State University, received a Master’s in Education from Central Connecticut State College, and obtained a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (now Sophie University). He also worked for Anka Behavioral Health where he established an in-depth understanding of the significant, and widely varied, factors affecting the environments of youth and adults. Dr. Giffin’s goals for his clients include re-establishing a sense of well-being and empowerment in a previously uncomfortable environment. He believes that his clients can overcome any obstacle. He has a unique view and experience with CBT and Systems Theory that results in long-lasting behavioral and interpersonal changes. Dr. Giffin has excelled in his practice as he establishes a partnership with his clients in a warm, safe, and non-judgmental space for them to achieve positive outcomes. Dr. Giffin enjoys yoga and bicycling. He is the parent of an adult daughter who has special needs and faces mental health issues. His daughter inspires him and enhances his abilities for empathy and understanding of the challenges that his clients face. Dr. Giffin accepts Aetna, Anthem, Blue Shield, Cigna, Oxford, United Health Care, and Oscar Health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Dr. Giffin’s sessions are all virtual at this time. His therapeutic process starts with an introductory session where, in easy conversation, the client can get a sense of Dr. Giffin’s style and therapeutic approach. This first session is intended to determine if the client feels, intuitively, whether or not Dr. Giffin would be a good match. There is no pressure to make a commitment after the first session, but rather, to take some time to think about the experience and/or to explore other therapists that might be a match. Dr. Giffin’s therapeutic approach is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy where the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviors is explored. The work lies in restructuring the clients thinking which may be skewed and not necessarily based in logic. The client may be experiencing depression, anxiety, anger and/or poor self-esteem. When thinking is restructured, it changes the subsequent feeling reaction to something that is more comfortable. This different thinking and feeling may manifest more productive behaviors. Dr. Giffin’s approach also includes Systems Theory which is to say that the client’s significant environments/systems, i.e., home, work, school and/or community are carefully evaluated for the factors that are affecting the client’s thinking, feelings and behaviors.
