Getting to know Dr. Mary E. Procidano

Dr. Procidano graduated from Fordham College and earned her Ph.D. from Indiana University’s graduate training program in clinical psychology, accredited by the American Psychological Association. She has been in independent clinical practice for over 30 years, licensed to practice in the State of New York, and Board-certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology. She has expertise in treating anxiety, depression, and anger, and specializes in treating the effects of stress and trauma, serious and chronic illnesses, and loss and grief. She works with individuals, couples, and families, using empirically-supported treatment approaches. Until 2021, Dr. Procidano was a full-time faculty member in Fordham University’s Psychology Department, where she taught courses including Psychotherapy Theories, Psychopathology, Personality Theories and Research, Psychology and Human Values, and Cross-cultural Psychology, and provided clinical supervision to doctoral students in Fordham’s APA-accredited Clinical Psychology Program. Her current research projects include examinations of resilient adjustment in the personal narratives of people with cancer and cancer survivors. She is an active member of the American Psychological Association, the Stress, Trauma, Anxiety, and Resilience Society, and the Westchester Psychological Association. Her scholarly/academic background gives her a somewhat unique opportunity to bring reflective practice – a synergy of clinical experience and engagement in clinically-relevant research–to each of her clinical encounters.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a licensed, board-certified clinical psychologist with over 30 years of clinical experience. I specialize in the counseling and treatment of individuals, couples, and families affected by stress and trauma, serious and chronic illness, and loss and grief. I have expertise in helping people to identify patterns of thinking and interacting with others that are not healthy, and to replace them with healthier ones. I have experience helping people to manage their stress and to thrive, and to recover from both early developmental traumas and recent traumas. I have experience helping people affected by illness to soothe emotional and physical discomfort and pain, stay focused and get things done, and maintain social relationships. I have experience helping people to feel happy instead of miserable recalling fond memories, and to find new paths and meanings in life, after a significant loss. I would be honored to collaborate with you in the process of psychotherapy. My approach is welcoming and cordial. You can expect me to listen carefully as we look at your situation, identify your personal strengths, and choose therapeutic goals that are right for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The therapist-client relationship is the foundation on which the work of counseling and psychotherapy builds. Studies have shown that therapist qualities such as warmth, ability to empathize, and commitment to the client's welfare, contribute significantly to a successful outcome in psychotherapy. The client should feel comfortable in the therapist's care. Therapist and client should be able to work as a team—to form a positive therapeutic alliance—to understand and resolve the client's difficulties. Clients can expect Dr. Procidano to listen carefully, to offer new perspectives on problems, and to communicate psychological understanding relevant to the situation at hand.
