Dr. Maryam Guiahi, MD

Gynecologist
2320 Bath St, Ste 317, Santa Barbara, CA
About me I was born in Tehran, Iran, shortly before the Revolution. Facing a failing democracy, my family immigrated to the U.S., where we spent most of my formative years on Long Island, NY. At the young age of seven, I committed to becoming a physician as I saw it as a way to dedicate my career to positively impacting others. Many of my early interests and experiences foreshadow how a career in women's health was a natural inclination. My medical school training years brought me to Chicago , IL. During my obgyn residency training at a Catholic hospital I witnessed systemic barriers to common reproductive care services like IUDs, sterilization, miscarriage management, and abortion care based on institutional guidelines. This formative experience reaffirmed my steadfast commitment to patient autonomy and access to high-quality reproductive care services. I focused my next two years on Complex Family Planning training at Columbia University in New York City and concurrently obtained a Masters in Epidemiology, Following the completion of my training, I joined the OBGYN department and Division of Family Planning at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where I eventually served as an Associate Professor. During my time in CO, my focus was on teaching, mentorship, and researching the impact of Catholic health care on patient care and OB/GYN training. With over 60 peer-reviewed publications and features in esteemed journals such as The New York Times, JAMA, and Obstetrics and Gynecology, I have remained dedicated to advancing knowledge in my field and using finding to impact policy changes. In 2020, during COVID, my family and I made the move to the picturesque Santa Barbara, CA. From 2020 to 2024, I served as the Chief Medical Officer for Planned Parenthood California Central Coast. During that time I spear-headed health equity initiatives during the aftermath of COVID and the Dobbs decision.
