Getting to know Dr. Matthew Givrad

Hi, I am a psych-educator and psychotherapist familiar with the theories and processes involved in effective psychoeducation and psychotherapy. My style is collaborative, working with clients to promote goal setting for lifestyle enhancement and change. I am committed to supporting clients in their mental and emotional health and pursuit of life satisfaction. Sometimes clients come with goals already formulated and seek help exploring how to achieve them. Other times, they are uncertain where to go and seek help formulating goals and mapping out how to achieve them. In either case, my approach is collaboration and joint exploration. When clients experience anxiety and depression, therapy often involves untangling past events and processing traumas that impede progress. I am skilled in treating complex traumas and trauma processing techniques such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Many clients seek resolution of specific problems; in these cases, I use Solution-Focused Therapy and Brief Psychotherapy techniques, which are effective and expedient. The language of children and adolescents is their behaviors. I am experienced in assessing and treating anxiety, depression, and traumas in children and adolescents using behavioral performance management techniques and collaborating with parents. I earned a doctorate in education (Ph.D.) from the University of Southern California and a doctorate in clinical psychology (PsyD) from California Southern University. I am also a graduate of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's program in Peer Support and Self-Help Recovery, which incorporates the effective use of 12-step programs in support of individual therapy.

Dr. Givrad wasted most of the appointment time filling out the insurance paperwork in front of me as I awkwardly sat there waiting for him to finish while occasionally answering a few questions for insurance purposes. Here's how the appointment went down: After a quick intro, he told me that he needed to fill out the insurance paperwork and asked if I could answer a few questions. He started by going through the race, gender, etc. first and then got to the reason for the visit. I briefly told him the reason and asked him if he'd like to hear how I got to this point. He agreed and I started speaking only for him to interrupt me soon after so that he could get back to the rest of the paperwork. I sat there for the rest of the appointment, awkwardly watching him as he finished the paperwork. Anytime there was a question that I wanted to elaborate on, he interrupted me because he really needed to finish that paperwork! This was an absolute waste of money, time, and energy!

The doctor is a great therapist.
He is patient and listens to everything I have to say before interjecting with guidance or feedback. I learn a lot from him, respect him as a person, and value his approach as we work together to get me through my past trauma.
This was my first session with him, so we're still getting to know each other but I'm looking forward to going back -- which feels like a great sign.
